چکیده

Data offloading is the systematic transfer of data traffic from a cellular network to a complementary network such as Wi-Fi with the aim of reducing congestion on mobile networks and providing high speed connectivity for the users. Given the increasing heterogeneity of network traffic and constantly changing network conditions, one key challenge that operators face with data offloading mechanisms in traditional network architectures is static authentication and offloading policies. This inadvertently leads to high latency and jitters and in some cases session discontinuity during offloading. Moreover, most of the offloading decisions are initiated by the users. Software Defined Networking (SDN) leverages on the control and data plane separation technique to offer a more dynamic approach to networking through programmable control functions in IP networks. In this work, we implement a proof-of-concept prototype of a providerassisted Wi-Fi offloading leveraging on SDN. We investigate the improvement in latency and throughput that a cellular operator can achieve in the access network by using SDN to dynamically offload mobile user traffic to a Wi-Fi network.

Mobility management through access network discovery and selection function for load balancing and power saving in software-defined networking environment

The mobile traffic has grown rapidly with the popularity of smart mobile devices. To accommodate increasing traffic, heterogeneous network integration is considered as a viable solution. By overlapping the coverage of heterogeneous networks (e.g., the long-term evolution (LTE) and Wi-Fi integrated network), the mobile operators can use the offloading service (e.g., Wi-Fi offloading) to reduce n...

Traffic Steering Framework for Mobile-Assisted Resource Management in Heterogeneous Networks

With the expected growth of mobile data traffic it is essential to manage the network resources efficiently. In order to undertake this challenge, we propose a framework for network-centric, mobile-assisted resource management, which facilitates traffic offloading from mobile network to Wi-Fi or open access small cells. A provision of desired quality of experience to the end-user is carried out...

On Practical Aspects of Mobile Data Offloading to Wi-Fi Networks

Data traffic over cellular networks is exhibiting an ongoing exponential growth, increasing by an order of magnitude every year and has already surpassed voice traffic. This increase in data traffic demand has led to a need for solutions to enhance capacity provision, whereby traffic offloading to Wi-Fi is one means that can enhance realised capacity. Though offloading to Wi-Fi networks has mat...

A Novel Approach for Controlling Mobile Data Offloading Between 3GPP and Non-3GPP Access Networks

Mobile network traffic is growing rapidly, and service providers must manage their networks efficiently to meet consumer demand. Mobile data offloading is the use of complementary network technologies for delivering data originally targeted for cellular networks. Access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) is the most complete 3GPP approach to date for controlling offloading between...
