چکیده

The influence coefficient method, which has advantages for conducting inverse analysis and sensitivity studies, is extended to simulate cohesive cracking in three-dimensional bodies when the crack path is known in advance. The method is combined with a focal point model to allow simulation of unload–reload cycles as well. This paper summarizes the theory behind the influence coefficient method and outlines how the method can be implemented in a numerical simulation program. The scaling factor technique is presented in order to use a single set of influence coefficients to simulate the response of identical bodies made of materials with different moduli of elasticity. 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Finite-deformation Irreversible Cohesive Elements for Three-dimensional Crack-propagation Analysis

We develop a three-dimensional nite-deformation cohesive element and a class of irreversible cohesive laws which enable the accurate and e cient tracking of dynamically growing cracks. The cohesive element governs the separation of the crack anks in accordance with an irreversible cohesive law, eventually leading to the formation of free surfaces, and is compatible with a conventional nite elem...

Exploring the Physics behind Dynamic Fragmentation through Parallel Simulations

The physical mechanisms underlying the dynamic fragmentation of heterogeneous brittle materials are explored through numerical simulations. The use of computational facilities, rather than experimental or fundamental sciences, ensures the accurate tracking of rapidly evolving fields (such as stress field, energies and damage). The numerical framework is based on Galerkin approximations coupled ...

Multi-Level hp-Adaptivity for Cohesive Fracture Modeling

Discretization induced oscillations in the load-displacement curve are a well known problem for simulations of cohesive crack growth with finite elements. The problem results from an insufficient resolution of the complex stress state within the cohesive zone ahead of the crack tip. This work demonstrates that the hp-version of the finite element method is ideally suited to resolve this complex...

A novel numerical framework for the three - dimensional modeling of brittle fracture

The aim of the present paper is a systematic elaboration of a three dimensional finite element analysis tool for discontinuous fracture in brittle solids. Brittle or quasi-brittle fracture usually occurs when a material reaches the limit of its strength and no plastic deformation has been observed prior to failure. In this novel approach, this kind of failure is characterized by three sets of g...

A critical evaluation of dynamic fracture simulations using cohesive surfaces

Finite element calculations of dynamic fracture based on embedding cohesive surfaces in a continuum indicate that the predictions are sensitive to the cohesive law used. Simulations were performed on a square block in plane strain with an initial edge crack loaded at a constant rate of strain. Cohesive laws that have an initial elastic response were observed to produce spontaneous branching at ...
