Turbulent Vortieity Transport in Three Dimensions 1

چکیده

The nature of vorticity transport in three-dimensional turbulent flow is investigated using data from a direct numerical simulation of channel flow. An extension of Taylor's (1932) vorticity transport theory is derived by a formal Lagrangian analysis in which care is taken to include nongradient transport effects associated with vortex stretching and shearing. A comparison is made between the predicted and exact forms of the nine components of the vorticity transport tensor as calculated from the simulation data. It is found that the qualitative agreement between the theory and the computed fluxes is excellent. The nongradient terms make a significant contribution near the boundary as an apparent consequence of the dynamical importance of coherent vortical structures. A model for the Reynolds shear stress consisting of a gradient term together with a nonlocal integral expression representing the effect of the pressure field on transport is extracted from the vorticity transport law. Computations reveal that a gradient vorticity transport model is acceptable only at a distance from the wall, w]hile the opposite is true in the case of momentum transport. These results agree with much earlier studies of G.I. Taylor.

Numerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model

Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...

Investigation of the Effect of Nanoparticles Mean Diameter on Turbulent Mixed Convection of a Nanofluid in a Horizontal Curved tube Using a Two Phase Approach

Turbulent mixed convection of a nanofluid (water/Al2O3, Φ=.02) has been studied numerically. Two-phase mixture model has been used to investigate the effects of nanoparticles mean diameter on the flow parameters. Nanoparticles distribution at the tube cross section shows that the particles are uniformly dispersed. The non-uniformity of the particles distribution occurs in the case of large nano...

Numerical Simulation of Premixed Turbulent Methane

In this paper we study the behavior of a premixed turbulent methane flame in three dimensions using numerical simulation. The simulations are performed using an adaptive time-dependent low Mach number combustion algorithm based on a second-order projection formulation that conserves both species mass and total enthalpy. The species and enthalpy equations are treated using an operator-split appr...
