Gender and Virtual Navigation: an Exploratory Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Gender issue in computer has captured the interest of many researchers in the last years. This paper reports a study that investigates people interaction with virtual environments. The study was carried out by observing a group of 50 users (22 males and 28 females) performing a set of predefined tasks during the interaction with a 3D representation of a virtual museum. At the end of the experimental session, a questionnaire was administered to all the participants. The analysis of the collected data reveals a very similar behavior of males and females, indicating that there is not any significant gender difference in this case.

Navigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network
Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...

Background Chou and Tsai (2007) found that a majority of Taiwanese high-school-aged students self-reported using virtual worlds (eg, video games) for entertainment, with males reporting higher frequencies of use over time than females. Additionally, findings from recent research (Lin, Tutwiler & Chang, in press) hint at the importance of considering student gender, prior use of virtual worlds, ...
متن کاملEducational campuses in Second Life, 2007-2009: the development of a framework for campus builders
Academics are increasingly looking at using virtual worlds for educational purposes, but the guidance for establishing a virtual presence is limited. This paper presents the results of an exploratory observational study on 95 virtual campuses in Second Life which has produced a framework that may assist staff or students in building their own campuses. The investigation first took place in 2007...
متن کاملParallel Worlds: Spatial and Textual Representations of Information Structure in VR
Navigation is central to information seeking in electronic worlds. Previous research on the physical world and virtual ones has considered the impact of environmental structure on navigation and learning. Such structure can be either spatial or textual. I propose an exploratory study to evaluate the effects of combining spatial and textual representations of information structure in different w...
متن کاملVirtual reality in vestibular diagnosis and rehabilitation
While vestibulo-oculomotor and vestibulo-spinal functions are usually investigated by means of electronystagmography and stabilometry, environmental exploration and navigation cannot be easily studied in the laboratory. We propose that virtual reality (VR) can provide a solution, especially for those interested in the assessment of vestibular influence over spatial cognitive activities. Subject...
