Response of the Wasp Cephalonomia tarsalis (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) to Beauveria bassiana (Hyphomycetes: Moniliales) as Free Conidia or Infection in Its Host, the Sawtoothed Grain Beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Coleoptera: Silvanidae)

چکیده
Cephalonomia tarsalis, an ectoparasitoid, and Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic fungus, are potential biological control agents for the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis. everal experiments were conducted to determine hether the two beneficial organisms are compatile. Wasps exhibited little avoidance behavior toard the fungus. Adult wasps oviposited on B. bassiana-infected larvae up to within 1 day of the host’s death and the appearance of red fungal pigment. Wasp larvae are susceptible to the fungus and die within 1 day of oviposition on host larvae with mycosis. A 3-h exposure of adult wasps to 100 mg of B. bassiana/kg of wheat resulted in 52.7% mortality. Nevertheless, the wasps entered into grain containing B. bassiana conidia as freely as they entered into onidia-free grain. The mean prevalence of B. bassina in 46 samples of pooled wheat representing 276 ocations was 7.5 colony-forming units/g of wheat. atural C. tarsalis exposure to B. bassiana in unreated stored wheat is likely to be below lethal uantities, and the introduction of the fungus in nsecticidal quantities would have a negative impact n C. tarsalis populations.

Control of sawtoothed grain beetles (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) in stored oats by using an entomopathogenic fungus in conjunction with seed resistance.
We tested the hypothesis that the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana would be more efficacious on oat cultivars that prolonged the immature developmental period of sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), a storage pest. However, percentage of reduction in progeny production was similar on whole 'Don' and 'Paul' oats treated with fungus, even though immature developmenta...

The sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), is an important pest of packagedconsumer foods, yet little is knownof its behavioral response to foododors.Adults and larvae are not believed to chew holes through packaging materials, but they may invade packaged food by entering through openings caused by improper sealing or handling, throughholes intentionally placed in packages by...

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a desiccant insecticide and most efficacious in low humidity. It acts on insect cuticle by absorbing lipids, and perhaps by cuticular abrasion. Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin, an entomopathogenic fungus, is most efficacious in high humidity and has a complex interaction with cuticular lipids. Interaction between these materials may enhance insect control perfo...
متن کاملMechanisms underlying sawtoothed grain beetle (Oryzaephilus surinamensis [L.]) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) infestation of consumer food packaging materials.
The sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), is an extremely destructive pest of packaged consumer food products. The beetle is not believed to chew directly through packaging materials, but to use openings or flaws in damaged or improperly sealed packages to gain entry. We investigated the behavioral mechanisms by which the sawtoothed grain beetle infests packages with flaws. S...

Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin was tested under maximum challenge conditions with an estimated dose of 1.1 × 10 5 conidia/mm 2 for its effects on eggs of four of the major beetle pests of stored grain and grain products. When ambient relative humidity (RH) was 92%, hatch of fungus-treated Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) eggs was 13% versus 58% for control eggs, and hatch of treated Tri...
