چکیده

Preprint submitted to Elsevier Preprint 5 February 2008 The time profiles of Cherenkov images of cosmic-ray showers and of γ-ray showers are investigated, using data gathered with the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes during the 1997 outbursts of Mrk 501. Photon arrival times are shown to vary across the shower images. The dominant feature is a time gradient along the major axis of the images. The gradient varies with the distance between the telescope and the shower core, and is maximal for large distances. The time profiles of cosmic-ray showers and of γ-ray showers differ in a characteristic fashion. The main features of the time profiles can be understood in terms of simple geometrical models. Use of the timing information towards improved shower reconstruction and cosmic-ray suppression is discussed.

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers

The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...

Cosmic-Ray Events as Background in Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

The dominant background for observations of γ-rays in the energy region above 50 GeV with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are cosmic-ray events. The images of most of the cosmic ray showers look significantly different from those of γ-rays and are therefore easily discriminated. However, a small fraction of events seems to be indistinguishable from γ-rays. This constitutes an irreducib...

Status of Silicon Photomultiplier Developments as optical Sensors for MAGIC/EUSO–like Detectors

MAGIC [2] is currently the world largest air Cherenkov telescope. MAGIC has been constructed to study sources of very high energy γ–rays (VHE–γ) in the energy range from a few tens of GeV up to a few tens of TeV. In the experiment, γ–rays are detected indirectly by collecting Cherenkov photons which are emitted in a VHE–γ induced electromagnetic cascade in the atmosphere. For a more comprehensi...

Evidence for TeV gamma ray emission from Cassiopeia A

232 hours of data were accumulated from 1997 to 1999, using the HEGRA Stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope System to observe the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. TeV γ-ray emission was detected at the 5σ level, and a flux of (5.8± 1.2stat ± 1.2syst)× 10phms above 1TeV was derived. The spectral distribution is consistent with a power law with a differential spectral index of −2.5± 0.4stat ± 0.1syst b...

TeV-PeV Neutrinos from Giant Flares of Magnetars and the Case of SGR 1806-20

We estimate the high energy neutrino flux from the giant flare of SGR 180620 on December 27, 2004, which irradiated Earth with a gamma-ray flux ∼ 10 times larger than the most luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected. The Antarctic Cherenkov neutrino detector AMANDA was on-line during the flare, and may either have detected high energy neutrinos for the first time from a cosmic point sour...
