چکیده

Eruption clouds in explosive volcanic eruptions are a kind of free boundary shear flow with very high Reynolds numbers (Re > 10), and their dynamics are governed by entrainment of ambient air into eruption clouds by turbulent mixing. We developed a numerical pseudo-gas model of an eruption cloud by employing three-dimensional coordinates, a high-order accuracy scheme, and a fine grid size in order to investigate the behavior of entrainment due to turbulent mixing. Our results have revealed that the efficiency of turbulent mixing no longer depends on the Reynolds number when the turbulence is fully developed. Our model has successfully reproduced the features of turbulent mixing at high Reynolds numbers as well as fundamental features of the dynamics of eruption clouds, such as the generation of eruption columns and/or pyroclastic flows.

Numerical Determination of the Efficiency of Entrainment in Volcanic Eruption Columns

Entrainment of air by turbulent mixing plays a central role in the dynamics of eruption clouds; the amount of entrained air controls eruption styles and heights of eruption columns. The efficiency of entrainment is quantified by the entrainment coefficient: the ratio between mean inward radial velocity at the edge and the mean vertical velocity. We directly determined the entrainment coefficien...

Exploring parameterization for turbulent entrainment‐mixing processes in clouds

[1] Different turbulent entrainment‐mixing processes (e.g., homogeneous and inhomogeneous) occur in clouds; accurate representation of these processes is critical for improving cloud‐related parameterizations in large‐scale models, but poorly understood and quantified. Using in situ aircraft observations over the U. S. Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plai...

Turbulent Mixing in the Interstellar Medium — an application for Lagrangian Tracer Particles

We use 3-dimensional numerical simulations of self-gravitating compressible turbulent gas in combination with Lagrangian tracer particles to investigate the mixing process of molecular hydrogen (H2) in interstellar clouds. Tracer particles are used to represent shock-compressed dense gas, which is associated with H2. We deposit tracer particles in regions of density contrast in excess of 10ρ0, ...

Wave Evolution in Water Bodies using Turbulent MPS Simulation

Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) which is a meshless and full Lagrangian method is employed to simulate nonlinear hydrodynamic behavior in a wide variety of engineering application including free surface water waves. In the present study, a numerical particle-based model is developed by the authors using MPS method to simulate different wave problems in the coastal waters. In this model flui...

12th International Symposium on Flow Visualization

Mixing of air containing small water droplets is investigated in the laboratory model to elucidate smallest scales of air entrainment and mixing in real clouds. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is applied to evaluate turbulent characteristics of the flow field generated in the cloud chamber by buoyancy of the introduced mist. It permits to investigate dynamics of the process for scales from 0.0...
