چکیده

A theoretical model of polyelectrolyte gels is presented to study continuous and discontinuous volume phase transitions induced by changing salt concentration in the external solution. Phase diagrams are constructed in terms of the polymer–solvent interaction parameters, external salt concentration, and concentration of fixed charges. Comparisons with previous experiments for an ionized acrylamide gel in mixed water–acetone solvents are made with good quantitative agreement for a monovalent salt (NaCl) but fair qualitative agreement for a divalent salt (MgCl2), using a simple set of parameters for both cases. The effective polymer–solvent interactions vary with the volume fraction of acetone in the mixed solvent, leading to either continuous or discontinuous volume transitions. The presence of divalent ions (Mg2þ) in addition to monovalent ions in the external solution reduces the critical salt concentration for the discontinuous transition by several orders of magnitude. Moreover, a secondary continuous transition is predicted between two highly swollen states for the case of a divalent salt. The present model may be further extended to study volume phase transitions of polyelectrolyte gels in response to other stimuli such as temperature, pH and electrical field. Equilibrium Swelling Study of Cationic Acrylamide-Based Hydrogels: Effect of Synthesis Parameters, and Phase Transition in Polyelectrolyte Solutions

Cationic copolymer gels of acrylamide and [(methacrylamido) Propyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) were synthesized by free radical aqueous solution polymerization. The Taguchi method, a robust experimental design, was employed for the optimization of the synthesis based on the equilibrium swelling capacity of the hydrogels. Based on Taguchi method a standard L16 orthogonal array with fiv...

Phase Transition of Acrylamide-Based Polyampholyte Gels in Water

The swelling behavior of acrylamide (AAm)–based polyampholyte hydrogels in water and in aqueous salt (NaCl) solutions was investigated. [(Methacrylamido)propyl]trimethyl-ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) and acrylic acid (AAc) were used as the ionic comonomer in the hydrogel preparation. Three sets of hydrogels containing 70 mol% AAm and 30 mol% ionic comonomers of varying mole ratios were prepared. T...

Molecular simulation of the swelling of polyelectrolyte gels by monovalent and divalent counterions.

Permanently crosslinked polyelectrolyte gels are known to undergo discontinuous first-order volume phase transitions, the onset of which may be caused by a number of factors. In this study we examine the volumetric properties of such polyelectrolyte gels in relation to the progressive substitution of monovalent counterions by divalent counterions as the gels are equilibrated in solvents of diff...

Swelling and collapse of polyelectrolyte gels in equilibrium with monovalent and divalent electrolyte solutions.

The swelling of polyelectrolyte (PE) gels by 1:1 and 2:1 salts is studied via osmotic ensemble Monte Carlo simulations at constant osmotic pressure and electrolyte chemical potential of a reservoir phase in equilibrium with a model PE network. Large molecular weight gels exhibit a remarkable swelling response to small changes in 2:1 salt concentration. Gel collapse is accompanied by the formati...
