چکیده
Heterodyne receivers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelength are widely used for radiometric spectral line observations for atmospheric remote sensing or radio astronomy. The quantitative analysis of such observations requires an accurate knowledge of the mixers’s sideband ratio. In addition, its potential sensitivity to spurious harmonics needs to be well understood. In this paper, we discuss a measurement technique for these receiver characteristics, which is based on a scanning Martin Puplett Interferometer used in conjunction with a wide band digital autocorrelation spectrometer for the analysis of the intermediate frequency band. We present measurement results of different double sideband and sideband separating mixers, which were developed for the proposed 340GHz multibeam limb sounder STEAMR.

Ice and Water Permittivities for Millimeter and Sub-millimeter Remote Sensing Applications
Recent advances in satellite remote sensing at near-millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths (~100-3000 GHz) require accurate complex permittivity for ice and liquid water at these frequencies for different temperatures, especially for cold atmospheric conditions. This paper summarizes the existing experimental permittivity data in the literature, and provides an updated empirical ice permitti...

We report on the development and characterization of the new compact infrared heterodyne receiver, iChips (Infrared Compact Heterodyne Instrument for Planetary Science). It is specially designed for ground-based observations of the terrestrial atmosphere in the mid-infrared wavelength region. Mid-infrared room temperature quantum cascade lasers are implemented into a heterodyne system for the f...
متن کاملA wideband lag correlator for heterodyne spectroscopy of broad astronomical and atmospheric spectral lines
WASP2 is a lag correlation spectrometer that is optimized for astronomical heterodyne observations of spectral lines from mid-infrared through centimeter wavelengths. Since the instrument is a wideband microwave spectrum analyzer, its basic technology is well suited to radio astronomy, atmospheric remote sensing, and any other application which requires observations of broad spectral lines. In ...
متن کاملTechniques of Radio Astronomy
This chapter provides an overview of the techniques of radio astronomy. This study began in 1931 with Jansky’s discovery of emission from the cosmos, but the period of rapid progress began fifteen years later. From then to the present, the wavelength range expanded from a few meters to the sub-millimeters, the angular resolution increased from degrees to finer than milli arc seconds and the rec...
متن کاملRemote Sensing of Tidal Situation by Monitoring Changes in Suspended Sediment Concentration in Surface Waters
Collecting information on suspended sediments concentration (SSC) in coastal waters and estuaries is vital for proper management of coastal environments. Traditionally, SSC used to be measured by time consuming and costly point measurements. This method allows the accurate measurement of SSC only for a point in space and time. Remote sensing from air-borne and space-borne sensors have proved to...
