Bacteria and yeast normal microbiota from respiratory tract and genital area of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

چکیده
The information available regarding microbiological aspects of bottlenose dolphins describes pathogenic bacteria associated with stranded dolphins. There are only few reports describing normal microbiota in captive animals. Bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa constitute the normal microbiota, many of these microorganisms are part of the environment, and this co-existence is usually beneficial for the host. Nevertheless, normal microbiota could become opportunistic pathogens when the animals are stressed, immunosuppressed, or under antimicrobial medical treatment. The bottlenose dolphin is very popular in sea parks, however scarce knowledge about their normal microbiota, pathogenic potential and possible zoonotic relationship had not been determined jet. This review helps to understand the significance of achieving a database of these microorganisms with the purpose of a wide comprehension of their role in dolphins and people who works in straight contact with them.

Exposure to Novel Parainfluenza Virus and Clinical Relevance in 2 Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Populations
Parainfluenza virus (PIV) is a leading cause of respiratory infections in humans. A novel virus closely related to human and bovine parainfluenza viruses types 3 (HPIV-3 and BPIV-3), named Tursiops truncatus parainfluenza virus type 1 (TtPIV-1), was isolated from a dolphin with respiratory disease. We developed a dolphin-specific ELISA to measure acute- and convalescent-phase PIV antibodies in ...
متن کاملLobomycosis in Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), North Carolina
Lacazia loboi, a cutaneous fungus, is found in humans and dolphins from transitional tropical (Florida) and tropical (South America) regions. We report 2 cases of lobomycosis in stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and 1 case of lobomycosis-like disease in 1 free-swimming, pelagic, offshore bottlenose dolphin from North Carolina, where no cases have previously been observed.
متن کاملWhy become speckled? Ontogeny and function of speckling in Shark Bay bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.)1
To date, color patterns have been used to assess cetacean age and taxonomic status, but few studies have determined precise correlates of coloration with known age or investigated its function. Here, we examine the ontogeny of speckling in 88 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) in Shark Bay, Australia, of known age, tracked from birth to age 34. Ventral speckles first appear in the genital area ...
متن کاملHerpesvirus in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus): cultivation, epidemiology, and associated pathology.
We studied the pathology, epidemiology, and clinical significance of genital herpesvirus infection in a zoo collection of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Samples from the genital mucosa of male (n=21) and female (n=15) dolphins were tested by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the DNA polymerase of herpesvirus. Herpesvirus infection was significantly associated with the ...
