Monetary Shocks in a Spatial Overlapping Generations Model

چکیده

The paper combines a simple monetary overlapping generations model with a simple abstract spatial structure, to produce a model that focuses on the effect of the distribution of cash balances on real and nominal variables, both across the economy, and over time. The model is then used to study the effects of a monetary shock. The economy is endowed with a spatial structure in the form of a Cayley graph. Overlapping generations of two-period lived agents inhabit the vertices of the graph. Agents produce when young and consume when old. However, agents only consume the goods produced by their neighbours. All transactions are mediated by money. In her first period of life, a generic agent produces output and sells it to her old neighbours in exchange for cash; she then carries the newly acquired cash balances into her second period of life, and uses them to purchase consumption goods from her young neighbours. Therefore, money flows through the economy, traveling from one vertex to adjacent vertices as a consequence of production and exchange. The distribution of money across the economy determines relative prices which, in turn, determines the profile of production across the economy. Therefore any monetary shock that alters the distribution of money will also have an impact on both the distribution and the level of production.

Active and passive monetary policy in an overlapping generations model

In a standard overlapping generations model, active monetary policy reinforces mechanisms that lead to equilibrium indeterminacy and to countercyclical behavior of young-age consumption. The policy rule which minimizes inflation volatility can be active or passive, depending on the characteristics of shocks and the risk aversion of households. Inflation forecast errors are always greater under ...

Learning and Equilibrium Selection in a Monetary Overlapping Generations Model with Sticky Prices

We study adaptive learning in a monetary overlapping generations model with sticky prices and monopolistic competition for the case where learning agents observe current endogenous variables. Observability of current variables is essential for informational consistency of the learning setup with the model set up but generates multiple temporary equilibria when prices are flexible and prevents a...

Interest rate effects of demographic change in a new-Keynesian life-cycle framework

This paper develops a small-scale DSGE model which embeds a demographic structure within a monetary policy framework. We extend the tractable, though non-monetary overlapping-generations model of Gertler (1999) and present a small synthesis model which combines the set-up of Gertler with a New Keynesian structure, implying that the short-run dynamics related to monetary policy are in line with ...

Optimal Choice of Monetary Instruments in an Economy with Real and Liquidity Shocks

Poole (QJE, 1970) using a stochastic IS-LM model presented the …rst formal treatment of the classic question: how should a monetary authority decide whether to use the money stock or the interest rate as the policy instrument. We update the seminal work of Poole in a microfounded ‡exible-price general equilibrium model of money using explicit welfare criteria. Speci…cally, we study the optimal ...

Constructing a Factor Augmented VAR Model to Analyze Transmission of Oil and Monetary Shocks to Iranian Economy

There is a growing attention to models which contain a broader set of economic data. In recent decade, introduction of Factor Augmented VAR models through augmentation of traditional VAR models with unobservable “factors” has made a new route to econometric modeling. In spite of the growing number of international papers and researches which have used FAVAR approach to modeling policy shocks to...
