dS isotope values of dissolved sulfate (SO4 ) as a tracer for battery acid (H2SO4) contamination in groundwater

چکیده
The application of sulfur isotope (dS) values of sulfate in groundwater provided the information necessary to evaluate the source, transport and fate of battery acid and associated contaminants at the Gulf Coast Recycling (GCR) facility. The chemical and isotopic composition of groundwater beneath the (GCR) property, a battery recycling facility in east Tampa, Florida, varies more than expected for an area of comparable size. Sulfate (SO4 ) values, for example, range from 1.2 to 11,500 mg/L and oxygen and hydrogen isotopes do not attenuate towards the weighted annual mean. Those samples that are high in sulfate generally have a low pH, which immediately indicates battery acid (H2SO4) contamination as a potential source for the sulfate. The low pH and high reactivity of the sulfuric acid groundwater cause the formation of hydrogeological microenvironments due to preferential dissolution of carbonate minerals, which in turn causes enhanced recharge and groundwater flow in certain areas; thus, the extreme scatter in the data set. Because of the difficult hydrogeology it is not straightforward to delineate the point-sources of contamination and up to five potential scenarios have to be evaluated: (1) seawater intrusion, (2) upwelling of high-sulfate groundwater, (3) local dissolution of gypsum, (4) an up-gradient contaminant source to the northeast of the GCR property and (5) battery acid contamination.

Groundwater Sr, Cl, and SO4 chemistry in the western and southern Yucatan Peninsula: insight into formation of Edzna Valley, Mexico
Strontium isotope chemistry, presented here, combined with previously obtained groundwater ion chemistry elucidates the stratigraphy of buried sedimentary rocks of the southern Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Whereas in groundwater of the northern Peninsula, ion chemistry is dominated by contact with a saline intrusion, the groundwater of southern Campeche and southern Quintana Roo has high SO4/Cl a...

[1] Biogeochemical cycling of N and S was examined at two watersheds in the Adirondack Mountains, New York, to better understand the retention and loss of these elements during winter and spring snowmelt. We analyzed stable isotope compositions of NO3 (dN-NO3 , dO-NO3 ) and SO4 2 (dS-SO4 2 , dO-SO4 2 ), along with concentrations and fluxes of NO3 and SO4 2 , in precipitation, throughfall, snowp...

dS and sulfate concentrations were determined in snow pit samples using a thermal ionization mass spectrometric technique capable of 0.2& accuracy and requires !5 lg (0.16 lmol) natural S. The technique utilizes a S–S double spike for instrumental mass fractionation correction, and has been applied to snow pit samples collected from the Inilchek Glacier, Kyrgyzstan and from Summit, Greenland. متن کاملStable isotopic composition of soil calcite (O, C) and gypsum (S) overlying Cu deposits in the Atacama Desert, Chile: Implications for mineral exploration, salt sources, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction
Soils overlying two porphyry Cu deposits (Spence, Gaby Sur) and the Pampa del Tamarugal, Atacama Desert, Northern Chile were collected in order to investigate the extent to which saline groundwaters influence ‘‘soil’’ chemistry in regions with thick Miocene and younger sediment cover. Soil carbonate (calcite) was analyzed for C and O isotopes and pedogenic gypsum for S isotopes. Soil calcite is...
