چکیده

The teleseismic transmission of seismic surface waves from earthquakes results in a loss of the high frequencies needed to infer information about Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle. A recent innovation in seismic imaging based on using long time sequences of ambient seismic noise moves beyond some of the limitations imposed on earthquakebased methods to reveal high resolution information about the crust and uppermost mantle. This method is called Ambient Noise Tomography (ANT) and has been applied predominantly to seismic surface waves. The application of ANT to data from ambitious new deployments of seismic arrays, such as the EarthScope USArray in the United States, has led to the development of large-scale seismic models of the earth’s crust and uppermost mantle at unprecedented resolution. In addition, new methods of data analysis and interpretation of ambient noise data that exploit the array nature of the TA are currently under development and hold out the promise for more reliable information about crustal and uppermost mantle anisotropy

Teleseismic surface wave tomography in the western U.S. using the Transportable Array component of USArray

[1] Fundamental mode Rayleigh waves recorded by the Transportable Array component of EarthScope/USArray from January 2006 through April 2007 are used to generate phase velocity maps at periods from 25 to 100 sec across the western U.S., including Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and western Idaho. At short periods (25–33 s), low velocity anomalies are observed in western Washington, weste...

Structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the western United States revealed by ambient noise and earthquake tomography

[1] Ambient noise tomography and multiple plane wave earthquake tomography are new methods of surface wave analysis that yield much more highly refined information about the crust and uppermost mantle than traditional surface wave techniques. Applied together to data observed at more than 300 broadband seismic stations from the Transportable Array component of the EarthScope USArray, these meth...

Surface wave tomography of the western United States from ambient seismic noise: Rayleigh wave group velocity maps

[1] We have applied ambient noise surface wave tomography to data that have emerged continuously from the EarthScope USArray Transportable Array (TA) between October 2004 and January 2007. Estimated Green’s functions result by cross-correlating noise records between every station-pair in the network. The 340 stations yield a total of more than 55,000 interstation paths. Within the 5to 50-s peri...

Helmholtz surface wave tomography for isotropic and azimuthally anisotropic structure

S U M M A R Y The growth of the Earthscope/USArray Transportable Array (TA) has prompted the development of new methods in surface wave tomography that track phase fronts across the array and map the traveltime field for each earthquake or for each station from ambient noise. Directionally dependent phase velocities are determined locally by measuring the gradient of the observed traveltime fie...
