چکیده

1 This paper has bene…ted from the communications with Steve Matthews on related issues. The authors also wish to thank Jacob Goeree for suggesting the approach taken in this study, and to Jan Boone, Dan Levin, and Sander Onderstal for helpful comments and discussions. The paper is a signi…cant extension of Chapter 4 of Audrey Hu's Ph.D. thesis " Essays on Auctions, " sponsored by the Netherlands Organization for Scienti…c Research (NWO) via a Rubicon grant (446-09-027), as well as part of a VICI grant (453-03-606). In a premium auction, the seller o¤ers some " pay back, " called premium, to the highest bidders. This paper investigates how the performance of such premium tactic is related to the participants'risk preferences. By developing an English premium auction model with symmetric interdependent values, where both the seller and the buyers may be risk averse (or preferring), we show that a) the premium reduces the riskiness of revenue regardless of the bidders'risk preferences, and b) the premium causes the expected revenue to increase in the bidders' risk tolerance. A " net-premium e¤ect " and a " second-order stochastic dominance e¤ect " are key to these results.

Premium auctions and risk preferences: An experimental study

In premium auctions, the highest losing bidder receives a reward from the seller. This paper studies the English premium auction (EPA) for the canonical case of symmetric private values with risk averse and risk loving bidders. We explicitly derive the symmetric equilibrium for bidders with CARA utilities and conduct an experimental study to test the theoretical predictions. In our experiment, ...

Reputation Price Premium in Online Auctions

Online auctions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the impact of seller reputation on the price paid for a good. This paper examined 62 "matched " auctions and found that an auction seller with a "reputation advantage " over another seller received a price premium of 8.3% on average, when the sellers offered nearly identical products. This paper discusses the properties of a "reputatio...

Bidder Motives in Cause Related Auctions

A cause-related auction is different from a list price setting in two major ways: First, the donation percentage directly affects the price of the item in that consumers’ value for charitable contributions enters their bids. Second, charitable consumers have a price externality on non-charitable consumers, so even a segment of consumers who place a premium on charitable contributions can signif...

Precautionary Bidding in Auctions

We analyze bidding behavior in auctions when risk-averse buyers bid for a good whose value is risky. We show that when the risk in the valuations increases, DARA bidders will reduce their bids by more than the appropriate increase in the risk premium. Ceteris paribus, buyers will be better off bidding for a more risky object in first price, second price, and English auctions with affiliated com...

The Determinants of Price in Internet Auctions of Used Cars

This study analyzes how auction, seller, and product factors influence the price premium in an eBay used car auction market. In auctions with at least one bid, the reputation of the seller, title status, and the time the auction ended influenced the price premium on the highest bid. For auctions that resulted in a sale, cars with clear title and dealers were able to secure significantly greater...
