چکیده

BACKGROUND Conventional approaches for removing parapharyngeal space tumors require a cervical skin incision and resection of soft tissues between the skin and parapharyngeal space. The surgical visual field for this conventional approach is limited. METHODS To decrease invasiveness during removal of benign parapharyngeal space tumors and to enhance the visual field, we devised a new approach called the modified endoscopic transnasal-transmaxillary-transpterygoid approach (MENMAP). The "surgical corridor" to the parapharyngeal space consists of the maxillary sinus, submucous tunnel under the lateral nasal wall, and the space created by removing the pterygoid process. RESULTS We successfully performed en bloc removal of a parapharyngeal space tumor using the MENMAP approach. The only surgical complication was hypoesthesia of the right hard palate and maxillary gingiva, which gradually improved. CONCLUSION The MENMAP approach is a viable alternative for removing parapharyngeal space tumors, as it is safe, feasible, and less invasive. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Access to the parapharyngeal space: an anatomical study comparing the endoscopic and open approaches.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS A subtemporal preauricular approach to the infratemporal fossa and parapharyngeal space has been the traditional path to tumors of this region. The morbidity associated with this procedure has lead to the pursuit of less invasive techniques. Endoscopic access using a minimally invasive transmaxillary/transpterygoid approach potentially may obviate the drawbacks associated ...

Image-Guided Endoscopic Endonasal Transmaxillary Transpterygoid Approach to Meckel's Cave.

The aim of this report was to summarize our preliminary experience on the resection of tumors located in Meckel's cave via the endoscopic endonasal transmaxillary transpterygoid approach with image-guided system and to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of this approach. Two patients who had tumors in left Meckel's cave underwent surgical treatment using the image-guided endoscopic endona...

Transoral Resection of Giant Parapharyngeal Space Tumors via a Combined Surgical Approach

Introduction: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors account for 0.5% of the head and neck neoplasms. Based on the evidence, 80% of these tumors are of a benign nature. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice for this condition. The present study was conducted to propose transoral resection as an efficient way to excise the benign well-defined tumors of the PPS.   Materials and Methods: Thi...

Transoral robotic assisted nasopharyngectomy via a lateral palatal flap approach.

INTRODUCTION Nasopharyngectomy has been established as a feasible curative treatment for salvaging recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma after radical radiotherapy. A large case series has also shown that the overall survival rate in nasopharyngectomy is comparable with reirradiation in small recurrent tumors. However, reirradiation has significant late complications from radiotherapy, and surgica...
