The role of black hole mass in quasar radio activity

چکیده

We use a homogeneous sample of ∼ 300, 0.3 < ∼ z < ∼ 3, radio-loud quasars drawn from the FIRST and 2dF QSO surveys to investigate a possible dependence of radio activity on black-hole mass. By analyzing composite spectra for the populations of radio-quiet and radio-loud QSOs – chosen to have the same redshift and luminosity distribution – we find with high statistical significance that radio-loud quasars are on average associated with black holes of masses ∼ 10M⊙, about twice as large as those measured for radio-quiet quasars (∼ 10M⊙). We also find a clear dependence of black hole mass on optical luminosity of the

Massive Black Holes at High Redshifts

Black holes with masses Mbh ∼ 10M⊙ dominate the accretion history of the Universe. These black hole masses are typical of those found in radio-selected galaxies today, suggesting that the giant elliptical hosts of low redshift radio galaxies were the hosts of powerful, mostly radio-quiet, quasars in the high redshift Universe. The reason that all radio galaxies are found in such hosts may be th...

Quasar Clustering from Sdss Dr5: Dependences on Physical Properties

Using a homogenous sample of 38,208 quasars with a sky coverage of ∼ 4000deg2 drawn from the SDSS Data Release Five quasar catalog, we study the dependence of quasar clustering on luminosity, virial black hole mass, quasar color, and radio loudness. At z < 2.5, quasar clustering depends weakly on luminosity and virial black hole mass, with typical uncertainty levels ∼ 10% for the measured corre...

The Radio Loudness Dichotomy: Environment or Black-hole Mass?

The results of a comprehensive study of the cluster environments and black-hole masses of an optically matched sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars are presented. No evidence is found for a difference in large-scale environments, with both quasar classes found to be located in clusters of Abell class ∼ 0 . Conversely, virial black-hole mass estimates based on Hβ line-widths show a clear...

Supermassive Black Holes in Early-Type Galaxies: Relationship with Radio Emission and Constraints on the Black Hole Mass Function

Using recently published estimates based on high spatial resolution spectroscopy of the mass MBH of nuclear black holes for a sample of nearby galaxies, we explore the dependence of galaxy nucleus emissivity at various wavelengths on MBH. We confirm an almost linear scaling of the black hole mass with the baryonic mass of the host spheroidal galaxy. A remarkably tight relationship is also found...

The black-hole masses of Seyfert galaxies and quasars

The central black-hole masses of a sample of 30 luminous quasars are estimated using Hβ fwhm measurements from a combination of new and previously-published nuclear spectra. The quasar black-hole mass estimates are combined with reverberationmapping measurements for a sample of Seyfert galaxies (Wandel, Peterson & Malkan 1999) in order to study AGN black-hole masses over a wide range in nuclear...
