چکیده

AIM Caffeic acid has been described as active against bacteria commonly isolated from wound infections. However, its low stability and poor solubility reduce caffeic acid applicability as a pharmaceutical product. These parameters can be enhanced by complexation with cyclodextrin. The main goal of the present work was to incorporate caffeic acid on cyclodextrin-based hydrogels capable of controlled delivery, in order to be used as antibacterial wound dressing. MATERIALS & METHODS Cyclodextrin-based hydrogels were prepared by direct crosslinking of β-cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether in the presence of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. RESULTS The hydrogels obtained combine good physicochemical properties (viscoelasticity, superabsorbency and high ability to retain and deliver caffeic acid) with the preservation of caffeic acid' antibacterial activity and effect on fibroblasts, with gel-β-cyclodextrin the most suited. CONCLUSION The hydrogels obtained could be useful as caffeic acid delivery-system devices for the treatment of wound infections.

Electrospun Fibers as a Dressing Material for Drug and Biological Agent Delivery in Wound Healing Applications

Wound healing is a complex tissue regeneration process that promotes the growth of new tissue to provide the body with the necessary barrier from the outside environment. In the class of non-healing wounds, diabetic wounds, and ulcers, dressing materials that are available clinically (e.g., gels and creams) have demonstrated only a slow improvement with current available technologies. Among all...

Semi-IPN Films and Electrospun Nanofibers Based On Chitosan/PVA as an Antibacterial Wound Dressing

The antimicrobial activity of a wound dressing is a key factor for preventing and treating wound infection. The current study evaluated the physiochemical properties and antimicrobial activities of semi-IPNs (interpenetrating polymer networks) based on chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films and nanofibers as candidates for wound dressings and investigated the effects of morphologies (nanofibrou...
