چکیده

We report on diffuse X-ray emission associated with the nearby solitary millisecond pulsar PSR J2124−3358 detected with XMM-Newton and Chandra. The emission extends from the pulsar to the northwest by ∼ 0.5 arcmin. The spectrum of the nebular emission can be modeled with a power-law of photon index 2.2 ± 0.4, in line with the emission originating from accelerated particles in the post shock flow. For PSR J0437−4715, PSR J0030+0451 and PSR J1024−0719, which all have spin parameters comparable to that of PSR J2124−3358, no diffuse emission is detected down to a 3 − σ limiting flux of ∼ 4 − 7 × 10 −15 ergs s −1 cm −2 .

Discovery of an X - ray Nebula associated with PSR J 2124 − 3358

We report the discovery of an X-ray neb-ula associated with the nearby millisecond pulsar PSR J2124−3358. This is the first time that extended emission from a solitary millisecond pulsar is detected. The emission extends from the pulsar to the northwest by ∼ 0.5 arcmin. The spectrum of the nebular emission can be modeled by a power law spectrum with photon index of 2.2 ± 0.4. This is inline wit...

VLT observations of the solitary millisecond pulsar PSR J 2124 − 3358

About 100 millisecond (ms) pulsars have been identified in the Galaxy, and only ≈ 10% of them are solitary, i.e. without a binary companion. Nothing is known on the optical emission properties of millisecond pulsars. Observations of solitary millisecond pulsars are the only way to detect their faint optical radiation, otherwise buried by the brighter white dwarf companion. As in the case of sol...

The X-ray emission properties of millisecond pulsars

Until now X-radiation from ten millisecond pulsars has been detected. In the present paper we summarize the observations and show the results of a re-analysis of archival ROSAT data. In addition we present the results of recent observations of PSR J0437−4715 with the ROSAT PSPC and HRI detectors. We show that the pulsed fraction is independent of energy in the range 0.1−2.4 keV. The pulse width...

Thermal X-rays from Millisecond Pulsars: Constraining the Fundamental Properties of Neutron Stars

We model the X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) by considering hot spot emission from a weakly magnetized neutron star (NS) covered by a hydrogen atmosphere. We investigate the limitations of using the thermal X-ray pulse profiles of MSPs to constrain the mass-to-radius (M/R) ratio of the NS. The accuracy is strongly dependent on the viewing angle and magnetic inclination but is ult...
