Successful transplantation of human and cat corneal tissue into rabbit corneae.

چکیده
IT is always regarded as axiomatic that there is no possibility of a corneal graft being successful unless the donor material comes from an animal of the same species (Nizetic, 1934; Duke-Elder, 1938; Lister, 1951; Avello, 1951; etc.), but this dogma is open to question. Ortin (1914, 1916, 1931) performed penetrating grafts on rabbits, using donor material from other species; in every case a permanent opacity resulted. He did not state, however, whether the operations had been technically successful and free from complications. For example, adherence of the iris to the graft would by itself have caused opacification of the graft apart from the question of tissue incompatibility between donor and host. Experimental lamellar heteroplasties do not appear to have attracted much attention. Von Walther (cited by Miihlbauer, 1840) made some experiments on animals and operated on a few clinical cases; these efforts were not successful and the report omits histological data and other important details. As no more satisfying reports could be found in the literature it was decided to attempt to fill in this gap in our knowledge.

Intrauterine xenotransplantation of human Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells into the liver of rabbit fetuses: A preliminary study for in vivo expression of the human liver genes
Objective(s): End-stage hepatic failure is a potentially life-threatening condition for which orthotopic liver transplantation is the only effective treatment. However, a shortage of available donor organs for transplantation each year results in the death of many patients waiting for liver transplantation. Xenotransplantation, or the transplantation of cells, tissues, or organs between differe...
متن کاملThe Effect of Lyophilization on Light Transmission of Amniotic Membrane: A Comparison with Rabbit Cornea
Background & Aims: Amniotic membrane persists for a long time after ocular transplantation (as corneal substitute) and can affect light transmission (transparency). The aim of this study was to evaluate the transparency of amniotic membrane after freeze-drying (lyophilization) and to compare the results with transparency of rabbit cornea. Methods: Transparency of rabbits’ corneas and fresh and ...
متن کاملTransplantation with cultured stem cells derived from the human amniotic membrane for corneal alkali burns: an experimental study.
Amniotic membranes (AM) have been used in a wide range of clinical applications. We successfully extracted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from human AM, but little is known about the use and efficacy of human amniotic membrane-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAM-dMSCs) for the treatment of alkali burns. We utilized hAM-dMSCs transplantation, AM grafting, and their combined use in the treatment o...
متن کاملDevelopment of quantitative methods of measuring antifungal drug effects in the rabbit cornea.
By means of multiple inoculation in each cornea with microtrephination a highly reproducible quantitative model of fungal infection of the rabbit corneal stroma has been produced. A known suspension of the chosen pathogen was systematically implanted into the trephine sites in the cornea. The degree of infectivity was monitored in both the preinoculation treated corneae (prophylaxis) and the po...
متن کاملROCK Inhibitors can Enhance the Adhesion of Cultured Corneal Endothelial Cells
Corneal endothelial dysfunction is a major cause of visual impairment, since these cells maintain corneal transparency. Although surgical techniques have been developed to replace abnormal corneal endothelium, these procedures are technically difficult and challenging due to a shortage of donor corneas. Regenerative medicine uses specially grown tissues to replace injured ones and has been succ...
