چکیده

A sinister and stealthy marauder, infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC) can potentially elude detection due to its pathologic appearance. As reviewed in the last issue of The WCC Note, the shape of ILC at pathology varies. It ranges from tumors with irregular margins; to those displaying diffuse invasion with cells infiltrating single file or loosely associated; to variants with large groups of cells. The particular pattern influences the MRI appearance of ILC; infiltrating lobular carcinoma may look mass like and possibly explosive, but can look crawling and very subtle. Understanding this spectrum can help keep ILC from avoiding discovery. Volume 4, Number 3 – March 31, 2010

Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast: MRI pathological correlation following bilateral total mastectomy.

BACKGROUND Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is more often multifocal and bilateral than invasive ductal carcinoma. MRI is usually recommended for detection of all ILC sites. The performance of known diagnostic breast MRI criteria for ILC characterization has not been evaluated to date using bilateral mastectomy specimens as gold standard. PURPOSE To determine the value of BI-RADS 2006 MRI cri...

Clinicopathological features of infiltrating lobular carcinomas comparing with infiltrating ductal carcinomas: a case control study

BACKGROUND Infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common type of invasive breast cancers and it has been reported to have some unique biologic and epidemiologic characteristics. METHODS Clinicopathological features of 95 patients with ILC, their relapse free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were retrospectively investigated and compared with those of 3,621 patients wi...

Nonpalpable mammographically occult invasive breast cancers detected by MRI.

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the MRI findings and histology of clinically and mammographically occult invasive breast cancers detected by MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review was undertaken of 1,336 breast MRI examinations performed during a 2-year period. Among these, 68 nonpalpable mammographically occult invasive cancers were identified in 57 women with...

Pleomorphic Lobular Carcinoma in a Male Breast: A Rare Occurrence

Carcinoma of male breast is uncommon as it accounts for 0.7% of total breast cancer. The pathology of male breast cancer is remarkably similar to that of cancers seen in women. The same histological subtypes of invasive cancer are present, although papillary carcinomas (both invasive and in situ) are more common and lobular carcinomas are less common. The predominant histological type, in males...
