A method for merging flow-dependent forecast error statistics from an ensemble with static statistics for use in high resolution variational data assimilation

چکیده
The background error covariance matrix, B, is often used in variational data assimilation for numerical weather prediction as a static and hence poor approximation to the fully dynamic forecast error covariance matrix, P . In this paper the concept of an Ensemble Reduced Rank Kalman Filter (EnRRKF) is outlined. In the EnRRKF the forecast error statistics in a subspace defined by an ensemble of states forecast by the dynamic model are found. These statistics are merged in a formal way with the static statistics, which apply in the remainder of the space. The combined statistics may then be used in a variational data assimilation setting. It is hoped that the nonlinear error growth of small-scale weather systems will be accurately captured by the EnRRKF, to produce accurate analyses and ultimately improved forecasts of extreme events.

A Hybrid ETKF–3DVAR Data Assimilation Scheme for the WRF Model. Part I: Observing System Simulation Experiment
A hybrid ensemble transform Kalman filter–three-dimensional variational data assimilation (ETKF– 3DVAR) system for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model is introduced. The system is based on the existing WRF 3DVAR. Unlike WRF 3DVAR, which utilizes a simple, static covariance model to estimate the forecast-error statistics, the hybrid system combines ensemble covariances with the stat...

Gridpoint statistical interpolation (GSI), a three-dimensional variational data assimilation method (3DVAR) has been widely used in operations and research in numerical weather prediction. The operational GSI uses a static background error covariance, which does not reflect the flow-dependent error statistics. Incorporating ensemble covariance in GSI provides a natural way to estimate the backg...

Given the chaotic nature of the atmosphere, ensemble forecasting is increasingly being embraced as an approach for providing probabilistic weather forecasts. The best method for determining a set of initial conditions for ensemble forecasts is still being debated. We have found that there are appealing characteristics to ensembles of forecasts generated by the perturbed observation (PO) method ...

1. Introduction Since its first introduction by Evensen (1994), the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) technique for data assimilation has received much attention. Rather than solving the equation for the time evolution of the probability density function of model state, the EnKF methods apply the Monte Carlo method to estimate the forecast error statistics. A large ensemble of model states are inte...

Ensemble-based data assimilation techniques are being explored as possible alternatives to current operational analysis techniques such as threeor four-dimensional variational assimilation. Ensemble-based assimilation techniques utilise an ensemble of parallel data assimilation and forecast cycles. The background-error covariances are estimated using the forecast ensemble and are used to produc...
