A New Monomeric Interpretation of Intrinsic Optical Bistability Observed in Y b - Doped Bromide Materials

We present a mechanism able to show intrinsic bistable behaviour involving single Y b ions embedded into bromide lattices, in which intrinsic optical bistability (IOB) has been observed. The mechanism is based on the experimentally found coupling between the Y b ion and the totally symmetric local mode of vibration of the [Y bBr6] 3− coordination unit. The model reproduces the IOB observed in CsCdBr3 : 1 % Y b 3+ and allows to understand the experimentally found presence of the phenomenon in the other bromides, but its absence in Cs3Lu2Cl9 : Y b .

Intrinsic bistability and hysteresis have been observed in the photoluminescence of bulk glass doped with Yb3+ and Tm3+ impurities at room temperature. Multiple instabilities also occur in channel waveguide lasers in this material. Consequently, local field effects exhibit more degrees of freedom than expected and have important implications for compact optical amplifiers and oscillators.
