Nonlinear instability of Hele-Shaw flows with smooth viscous profiles

چکیده
We rigorously derive nonlinear instability of Hele-Shaw flows moving with a constant velocity in the presence of smooth viscosity profiles where the viscosity upstream is lower than the viscosity downstream. This is a single-layer problem without any material interface. The instability of the basic flow is driven by a viscosity gradient as opposed to conventional interfacial Saffman–Taylor instability where the instability is driven by a viscosity jump across the interface. Existing analytical techniques are used in this paper to establish nonlinear instability. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. MSC: 35L; 35P; 35Q; 76B; 76E

Selection Principle of Optimal Profiles for Immiscible Multi-Fluid Hele-Shaw Flows and Stabilization
In this paper, we discuss a previously unknown selection principle of optimal viscous configurations for immiscible multi-fluid Hele-Shaw flows that have emerged from numerical experiments on threeand four-layer flows. Moreover, numerical investigation on four-layer flows shows evidence of four-layer systems which are almost completely stabilizing. Simple physical mechanisms that explain both o...
متن کاملRadial fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell: a weakly nonlinear analysis
The Saffman-Taylor viscous fingering instability occurs when a less viscous fluid displaces a more viscous one between narrowly spaced parallel plates in a Hele-Shaw cell. Experiments in radial flow geometry form fan-like patterns, in which fingers of different lengths compete, spread and split. Our weakly nonlinear analysis of the instability predicts these phenomena, which are beyond the scop...
متن کاملSome useful upper bounds for the selection of optimal profiles
In enhanced oil recovery by chemical flooding within tertiary oil recovery, it is often necessary to choose optimal viscous profiles of the injected displacing fluids that reduce growth rates of hydrodynamic instabilities the most thereby substantially reducing the well-known fingering problem and improving oil recovery. Within the three-layer Hele–Shaw model, we show in this paper that selecti...
متن کاملA simple derivation of an upper bound in the presence of a viscosity gradient in three-layer Hele-Shaw flows
An upper bound on the growth rate of disturbances in three-layer Hele-Shaw flows with the middle layer having a smooth viscous profile is obtained using a weak formulation of the disturbance equations. A recently reported approach for the derivation of this bound is tedious, cumbersome, and requires numerical analysis. In contrast, the present approach is very simple, elegant, and requires no n...
متن کاملOn a new surfactant-driven fingering phenomenon in a Hele-Shaw cell
According to the Saffman–Taylor criterion there is no instability when a more viscous fluid is displacing a less viscous one in a Hele-Shaw cell. Yet an instability was observed experimentally (Chan et al. 1997) in the same classical set-up but with the inner walls of the cell coated with surfactant solution. Linear stability analysis is applied to reveal the basic mechanism of this new instabi...
