The dexamethasone suppression test as a predictor of sleep deprivation antidepressant effect.

چکیده
An abnormal dexamethasone suppression test (DST) result, a sensitive and specific marker for endogenous depression, was found to be associated with an antidepressant response to sleep deprivation in patients who met DSM-III criteria for Major Depressive Episode regardless of whether they met criteria for melancholia or psychotic subtypes of this disorder. These findings support previous reports of an association between an abnormal DST result and antidepressant effects of sleep deprivation in depressed patients. Our results extend the positive association between an abnormal DST result and the antidepressant response to sleep deprivation to include depressed patients who are clinically nonmelancholic during their current episode but who have an abnormal DST result.

Monitoring of antidepressant response to ECT with polysomnographic recordings and the dexamethasone suppression test.
Ten patients treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) only were followed with serial sleep polysomnographic recordings and dexamethasone suppression tests (DSTs). Both biological correlates of depression showed improvement with ECT. The use of serial sleep measures and serial DSTs in monitoring the clinical response to ECT is discussed.

متن کاملSerial monitoring of antidepressant response to electroconvulsive therapy with sleep EEG recordings and dexamethasone suppression tests.
The study of the biological correlates of major depressive disorder (MDD) has received great impetus in recent years. Electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep measurements and the Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST) have been among the most studied and productive of these biological correlates. Commonly described EEG sleep abnormalities in MDD include shortened rapid eye movement (REM) latency, inc...
