Packet Delay Monitoring without a GPS

چکیده
This paper illustrates a technique to characterize one-way packet delays. In the spirit of [9] such technique does not depend on external clock synchronization facilities: instead, it computes the relative skew of the two clocks, and uses this information to characterize one-way packet delays. We focus on the applicability of such technique to a network monitoring environment, and perform an extensive test that includes second order clock frequency variations. We conclude that the approach is especially suited to estimate jitter, and other “local” characteristics of one-way delay variation. It can be helpful also to evaluate second order parameters of one-way delay, like standard deviation, when second order variations of clock frequency, usually due to temperature variations, are compensated by hardware. This result makes one-way delay variations measurement widely accessible to Internet hosts, at a cost which is overall comparable with that of a ping.

Design and Deployment of a Passive Monitoring Infrastructure
This paper presents the architecture of a passive monitoring system installed within the Sprint IP backbone network. This system differs from other packet monitoring systems in that it collects packet-level traces from multiple links within the network and provides the capability to correlate the data using highly accurate GPS timestamps. After a thorough description of the monitoring systems, ...
متن کاملPacket-Oriented Routing in Delay-Tolerant Vehicular Sensor Networks
Currently, vehicular sensor network (VSN) has been paid much attention for monitoring the physical world of urban areas. We have studied VSNs by utilizing about 4000 taxis and 1000 buses equipped with GPS-based mobile sensors in Shanghai to constitute a virtual vehicular sensor network. The communication-connection intermittence makes the routing issue nontrivial when delay-tolerant application...
متن کاملProvisioning IP backbone networks based on measurements
The theme of this thesis is the enhancement of current IP backbone provisioning practices in the presence of additional network measurements. Current practices are heavily dependent on the intuition of the human operators. Traffic variability, scalability issues, lack of monitoring information, and complex interactions between interand intra-domain routing protocols result in network management...
متن کاملWF2Q: Worst-Case Fair Weighted Fair Queueing
The Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) discipline is proven to have two desirable properties: (a) it can provide an end-to-end bounded-delay service to a session whose tra c is constrained by a leaky bucket; (b) it can ensure fair allocation of bandwidth among all backlogged sessions regardless of whether or not their tra c is constrained. The former property is the basis for supporting guaran...
متن کاملEnd-to-End Statistical Delay Service under GPS and EDF Scheduling: A Comparison Study
Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) has gained much popularity in recent years as a simple and effective scheduling mechanism for the provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) in emerging high-speed networks. For supporting deterministic end-to-end delay guarantees, GPS is known to be sub-optimal in comparison to the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling discipline; nevertheless it is often p...
