For weak acids and bases, these protonation reactions occur in the intermediate pH range. Dealing with monoprotic or diprotic acids and bases, the corresponding binding isotherm is referred to as the titration curve, and the corresponding chemical equilibria are discussed in all introductory chemistry courses. When one is interested in the binding of protons to weak polyelectrolytes, the situation is more complicated. The principal reason is that in polyelectrolytes many ionizable sites interact and the binding isotherm is the result of the many-body interactions among all of them. For a monoprotic acid or base, there is only one site, and interactions play no role. For a diprotic system, interactions start to play a role, but can be within the classical chemical equilibrium framework. Here we explain how to describe and to understand the titration curves of weak polyelectrolytes [1,2].

Reorganization of hydrogen bond network makes strong polyelectrolyte brushes pH-responsive
Weak polyelectrolytes have found extensive practical applications owing to their rich pH-responsive properties. In contrast, strong polyelectrolytes have long been regarded as pH-insensitive based on the well-established fact that the average degree of charging of strong polyelectrolyte chains is independent of pH. The possible applications of strong polyelectrolytes in smart materials have, th...

Multilayer thin films prepared from weak polyelectrolytes can exhibit a rich suite of anomalous physicochemical properties. One of the major factors that influence the properties of such films is the acid/base chemistry of the weak functional groups of the polyelectrolytes. In fact, the apparent dissociation constants of weak polyelectrolytes can shift by as much as 1–4 pH units upon incorporat...

Chemical charging of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and graphenes to generate soluble salts shows great promise as a processing route for electronic applications, but raises fundamental questions. The reduction potentials of highly-charged nanocarbon polyelectrolyte ions were investigated by considering their chemical reactivity towards metal salts/complexes in forming metal nanopartic...

Multilayers with low charge density polyelectrolytes assembled on thin films of cellulose were studied by piezoelectric microgravimetry. The substrates were produced from colloidal suspensions of cotton fibers before and after modification with cationic and anionic groups via epoxy intermediates of quaternary ammonium and carboxymethylation, respectively. Two different levels of ionicity were u...

We introduce a generalized nonuniform mean-field formalism to describe the dissociation of weak rodlike polyelectrolytes (PEs). Our approach allows for two-sublattice symmetry breaking which in titration curves is associated with a plateau for intermediate dissociation degrees. We first test our method in the case of a single weak PE by comparison with exact enumeration studies and show that it...
