Demonstration of integrated microscale optics in surface-electrode ion traps

چکیده
In ion trap quantum information processing, efficient fluorescence collection is critical for fast, high-fidelity qubit detection and ion–photon entanglement. The expected size of future many-ion processors requires scalable light collection systems. We report on the development and testing of a microfabricated surface-electrode ion trap with an integrated high-numerical aperture (NA) micromirror for fluorescence collection. When coupled to a lowNA lens, the optical system is inherently scalable to large arrays of mirrors in a single device. We demonstrate the stable trapping and transport of 40Ca ions over a 0.63 NA micromirror and observe a factor of 1.9 enhancement of photon collection compared to the planar region of the trap. Microfabricated surface ion trap on a high-finesse optical mirror.
A novel approach to optics integration in ion traps is demonstrated based on a surface electrode ion trap that is microfabricated on top of a dielectric mirror. Additional optical losses due to fabrication are found to be as low as 80 ppm for light at 422 nm. The integrated mirror is used to demonstrate light collection from, and imaging of, a single Sr88(+) ion trapped 169±4 μm above the mirror.

The Scalable Multiplexed Ion Trap II (SMIT II) program based at Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) was funded by IARPA during the period from August 2008 through July 2010. The overall goal was to design, fabricate and test surface ion traps through a closely correlated, multi-disciplinary approach involving design, simulation, fabrication and test facilities at GTRI and the Nanotechnology ...
متن کاملUV-sensitive superconducting nanowire single photon detectors for integration in an ion trap.
We demonstrate superconducting nanowire single photon detectors with 76 ± 4% system detection efficiency at a wavelength of 315 nm and an operating temperature of 3.2 K, with a background count rate below 1 count per second at saturated detection efficiency. We propose integrating these detectors into planar surface electrode radio-frequency Paul traps for use in trapped ion quantum information...
متن کاملSuppression of heating rates in cryogenic surface-electrode ion traps.
Dense arrays of trapped ions provide one way of scaling up ion trap quantum information processing. However, miniaturization of ion traps is currently limited by sharply increasing motional state decoherence at sub-100 mum ion-electrode distances. We characterize heating rates in cryogenically cooled surface-electrode traps, with characteristic sizes in the 75 to 150 mum range. Upon cooling to ...
