Towards Reliable Automatic Characterization of Neonatal Hip Dysplasia from 3D Ultrasound Images

چکیده
Ultrasound (US) imaging is recommended for early detection of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), which includes a spectrum of hip joint abnormalities in infants. However, the currently standard 2-dimensional (2D) US-based approach to measuring the dysplasia metric (DM), namely the α angle, suffers from high within-hip variability with standard deviations typically ranging between 3◦ − 7◦. Such high variability leads to elevated overand under-treatment rates in hip classification. To reduce this high variability inherent to the 2D α angle, α2D, we propose a 3D US-based DM in the form of a 3D α angle, α3D, that more accurately characterizes the morphology of an infant’s hip joint. Our method leverages phase symmetry features that automatically identify the 3D bone/cartilage structures to compute α3D. Validating on 30 clinical patient hip examinations, we demonstrate the within-hip variability of α3D to be significantly smaller than α2D (28.9% reduction, p < 0.01). Our findings indicate that α3D may be significantly more reproducible than the conventional 2D measure, which will likely reduce misclassification rates.

Automatic Evaluation of Scan Adequacy and Dysplasia Metrics in 2-D Ultrasound Images of the Neonatal Hip.
Ultrasound (US) imaging of an infant's hip joint is widely used for early detection of developmental dysplasia of the hip. In current US-based diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip, trained clinicians acquire US images and, if they judge them to be adequate (i.e., to contain relevant hip joint structures), analyze them manually to extract clinically useful dysplasia metrics. However, ...

Background: Accurate and early detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver, which is a major cause of chronic diseases is very important and is vital to prevent the complications associated with this disease. Ultrasound of the liver is the most common and widely performed method of diagnosing fatty liver. However, due to the low quality of ultrasound images, the need for an automatic and intelligent...
متن کاملSelective ultrasound screening is inadequate to identify patients who present with symptomatic adult acetabular dysplasia
PURPOSE One goal of neonatal screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the prevention of late surgery. However, the majority of patients with acetabular dysplasia at skeletal maturity are not diagnosed with DDH during infancy. Selective ultrasound screening may identify patients with neonatal hip instability, but may be ineffective for the prevention of dysplasia presenting in a...
متن کاملThe use of ultrasound in determining the initiation of treatment in instability of the hip in neonates.
We have evaluated the effect of the use of ultrasound in determining the initiation of treatment in neonatal instability of the hip. A total of 99 newborn infants (1.5% of all live births) with neonatal hip instability did not have treatment from birth, but were re-examined at eight to 15 days. In the 31 who had persisting clinical instability and ultrasound abnormality, treatment was then star...

This paper presents an algorithm aiming to reconstruct and segment carotid arteries and plaques from a series of ultrasound (US) images. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the volume of interest (VOI) is based on a Bayesian approach, assuming a Rayleigh model describing the observation data and a TV based prior to regularize the solution. This allows to remove speckle data which commo...
