Case Representation and Retrieval in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Semio- fuzzy Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder, especially in middle-aged and obese patients. However, the diagnosis and treatment of OSA is complex, particularly in patients with mild or moderate symptoms and co-occurring medical problems. Furthermore, sleep disorders are interconnected with diverse factors, such life style, shift work, and psychological problems. Case-based reasoning (CBR) is a natural approach in such a highly complex domain. CBR allows for the retrieval and analysis of successful outcomes, as well as, failures in the treatment. To address the complexity of the domain knowledge, the authors applied a semio-fuzzy framework, an approach combining fuzzy logic and semiotics, in the development of a prototype CBR system. The system has been implemented in an educational sleep disorders clinic to assist respiratory students in the retrieval of prototypical cases, and has been particularly helpful in analysis of co-occurring medical problems and the treatment process.

Knowledge-Based Induction of Clinical Prediction Rules
ABsTRAcT This chapter describes how to integrate medical knowledge with purely inductive (data-driven) methods for the creation of clinical prediction rules. It addresses three issues: representation of medical knowledge , secondary analysis of medical data, and evaluation of automatically induced predictive models in the context of existing knowledge. To address the complexity of the domain kn...
متن کاملEffects of Biofeedback Therapy on Cardiovascular and Respiratory Indices in NREM Sleep Parasomnias with Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Case study
Introduction: Non-REM parasomnias are a relatively common condition in the general human population. Current treatment plans are usually based on small case series and reports. Considering the effects of sleep disorders on different aspects of human life and the failure of pharmacological treatments in this field, the present study was designed to investigate a case of this sleep disorders with...

متن کاملObstructive sleep apnea syndrome and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy: a case control study
Background: Sleep apnea is temporary cessation or absence of breathing during sleep. Significant increase in blood pressure is clinically seen in apneic episodes. The aim of this study was to examine sleep apnea syndrome as a risk factor for non- arthritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in a case control study. Methods: Nineteen NAION patients (9 men and 10 women) and 31 age and ...
