The General Circulation and Robust Relative Humidity

چکیده
The sensitivity of free-tropospheric relative humidity to cloud microphysics and dynamics is explored using a simple 2-D humidity model and various configurations of the NCAR CAM3 Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM). In one configuration the imposed surface temperatures and radiative perturbations effectively eliminated the Hadley and Walker circulations and the main westerly jet, creating instead a homogeneous “boiling kettle” world in lowand mid-latitudes. A similarly homogeneous state was created in the 2-D model by rapid horizontal mixing. Relative humidity R simulated by the AGCM was insensitive to surface warming. Doubling a parameter governing cloud water re-evaporation increased tropical mean R near mid-troposphere by about 4% with a realistic circulation but by more than 10% in the horizontally homogeneous states. This was consistent in both models. AGCM microphysical sensitivity decreased in the upper troposphere, and vanished outside the Tropics. Convective organization by the general circulation evidently makes relative humidity much more robust to microphysical details by concentrating the rainfall in moist environments. Models that fail to capture this will overestimate the microphysical sensitivity of humidity. Based on these results, the uncertainty in the strength of the water vapor feedback associated with cloud microphysical processes seems unlikely to exceed a few percent. This does not include uncertainties associated with large-scale dynamics or cloud-radiative effects, which we cannot quantify, although radical CAM3 circulation changes reported here had surprisingly little impact on simulated relative humidity.

The Relative Humidity in an Isentropic Advection–Condensation Model: Limited Poleward Influence and Properties of Subtropical Minima
An idealized model of advection and condensation of water vapor is considered as a representation of processes influencing the humidity distribution along isentropic surfaces in the free troposphere. Results are presented for how the mean relative humidity distribution varies in response to changes in the distribution of saturation specific humidity and in the amplitude of a tropical moisture s...
متن کاملLower-Tropospheric Humidity–Temperature Relationships in Radiosonde Observations and Atmospheric General Circulation Models
Annual and seasonal correlations between temperature and both specific and relative humidity are presented based on radiosonde station data over the tropical Pacific Ocean and North America. Results are presented for the surface and the 850-, 700-, and 500-hPa levels. The correlations between anomalies of temperature and relative humidity are generally negative, and those between temperature an...

[1] Numerous studies with general circulation models suggest that tropical deforestation can result in regional-scale climate change; namely, increased air temperature and wind speed and reduced precipitation and relative humidity. To quantify how this climate change should affect fire risk, we used the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) CCM3.2 general circulation model and remote ...

Climatic conditions affect the performance of photovoltaic panels. In this study, the effect of ambient air temperature and relative humidity on the performance parameters of two types of silicon photovoltaic solar panels, including mono-crystalline silicon (mc-Si) and polycrystalline silicon (pc-Si), were studied in the laboratory scale. The experiments were carried out by the performance test...
متن کاملDiagnosis of Zonal Mean Relative Humidity Changes in a Warmer Climate
The zonal mean relative humidity response to a doubling of CO2 in a climate model is examined using a global climate model and an offline tracer transport model. Offline tracer transport model simulations are driven by the output from two configurations of the climate model, one with 1979 concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases and one with doubled CO2. A set of last saturation tracers i...
