چکیده

If metaphor is to be viewed as a fundamental cognitive agency, as recent work suggests, what ramifications does this view have for a model of semantic memory? This paper argues that if various signature phenomena of metaphor are to be given adequate computational treatment, a parallel adaptive (learning) network model of memory is required. Such a model, the Sapper framework, is described; Sapper is a hybrid symbolic/ connectionist model which views the interpretation of novel metaphors as a process of connectionist bridgebuilding, which subsequently alters the activation dynamics between conceptual schemata.

Computability as a Limiting Cognitive Constraint: Complexity Concerns in Metaphor Comprehension about which Cognitive Linguists should be Aware

If metaphor is to be viewed as a fundamental cognitive agency, as recent work suggests, what ramifications does this view have for a model of semantic memory? This paper presents a computational treatment of metaphor comprehension, named Sapper (see Veale & Keane. 1993, 1994; Veale et al. 1995, 1996), which is built upon a parallel, adaptive, and learning network model of semantic memory. Sappe...

Metaphor as Categorization: A Connectionist Implementation

A key issue for models of metaphor comprehension is to explain how, in some metaphorical comparison “A is B,” only some features of B are transferred to A. The features of B that are transferred to A depend both on A and on B. This is the central thrust of Black’s (1979) well-known interaction theory of metaphor comprehension. However, this theory is somewhat abstract, and it is not obvious how...

From Embodiment to Metaphor: A Study on Social Cognitive Development and Conceptual Metaphor in Persian-Speaking Children

This study explores the metaphoric comprehension of normal Persian-speaking children, as well as theories of cognitive development and cultural and social impacts. The researchers discuss the improvement of the understanding of ontological conceptual metaphors through age growth and cognitive development, and how it helps to expand children’s thoughts and knowledge of the world. In this study, ...

A Microfeature Based Approach Towards Metaphor Interpretation

This paper advocates a microfeature based approach towards developing computationalmodels for metaphor interpretation. It is argued that the existing models based on semantic networks and mappings of complex symbolic structures are insu cient and inappropriate for modeling metaphors. A connectionist model of metaphor interpretation based on microfeatures is presented, which tries to take into a...
