چکیده

The Lagrange multiplier method for combining observations and models (i.e., the adjoint method or “4DVAR”) has been avoided or approximated when the numerical model is highly nonlinear or chaotic. This approach has been adopted primarily due to difficulties in the initialization of low-dimensional chaotic models, where the search for optimal initial conditions by gradient-descent algorithms is hampered by multiple local minima. Although initialization is an important task for numerical weather prediction, ocean state estimation usually demands an additional task – a solution of the time-dependent surface boundary conditions that result from atmosphere–ocean interaction. Here, we apply the Lagrange multiplier method to an analogous boundary control problem, tracking the trajectory of the forced chaotic pendulum. Contrary to previous assertions, it is demonstrated that the Lagrange multiplier method can track multiple chaotic transitions through time, so long as the boundary conditions render the system controllable. Thus, the nonlinear timescale poses no limit to the time interval for successful Lagrange multiplier-based estimation. That the key criterion is controllability, not a pure measure of dynamical stability or chaos, illustrates the similarities between the Lagrange multiplier method and other state estimation methods. The results with the chaotic pendulum suggest that nonlinearity should not be a fundamental obstacle to ocean state estimation with eddy-resolving models, especially when using an improved first-guess trajectory.

A Penalized Identiication Criterion for Securing Controllability in Adaptive Control

Reportedly, standard identiication algorithms do not guarantee the controllability of the estimated system. In this paper, a penalized least squares (PLS) identiication criterion is proposed to overcome this diiculty. The criterion is shown to provide estimated systems which exhibit an uniform controllability property through time. Moreover, the Lai and Wei upper bound for the least squares est...

Kato's chaos and P-chaos of a coupled lattice system given by Garcia Guirao and Lampart which is related with Belusov-Zhabotinskii reaction

In this article, we further consider the above system. In particular, we give a sufficient condition under which the above system is Kato chaotic for $eta=0$ and a necessary condition for the above system to be Kato chaotic for $eta=0$. Moreover, it is deduced that for $eta=0$, if $Theta$ is P-chaotic then so is this system, where a continuous map $Theta$ from a compact metric space $Z$ to itse...

The Assessment of Applying Chaos Theory for Daily Traffic Estimation

Road traffic volumes in intercity roads are generally estimated by probability functions, statistical techniques or meta-heuristic approaches such as artificial neural networks. As the road traffic volumes depend on input variables and mainly road geometrical design, weather conditions, day or night time, weekend or national holidays and so on, these are also estimated by pattern recognition te...

On Near-controllability, Nearly-controllable Subspaces, and Near-controllability Index of a Class of Discrete-time Bilinear Systems: A Root Locus Approach

This paper studies near-controllability of a class of discrete-time bilinear systems via a root locus approach. A necessary and sufficient criterion for the systems to be nearly controllable is given. In particular, by using the root locus approach, the control inputs which achieve the state transition for the nearly controllable systems can be computed. Furthermore, for the non-nearly controll...
