Optical Quality of Three Multifocal Lenses.

چکیده
We enjoyed reading the article by Esteve-Taboada et al.,1 but were disappointed by their interpretation of their data. Their optical model has important limitations that make it inappropriate to make broad clinical generalizations from their findings. First, the “aberration-free” eye model is highly artificial. In particular, the absence of any spherical aberration is relevant to only a small percentage of eyes undergoing cataract surgery. Our understanding is that the FineVision Micro F12 lens has a spherical aberration of -0.1 μm and the AT LISA tri lens has a spherical aberration of -0.18 μm. Because the TECNIS Symfony lens has a spherical aberration of -0.27 μm, it would be disadvantaged in this model. Second, the authors used monochromatic light at 545 nm. This again is a testing parameter that does not reflect real-world vision. As we understand it, the TECNIS Symfony lens corrects for chromatic aberration, so testing with white light would better simulate what patients might experience.2,3 Finally, more accurate appraisal of clinical performance would require evaluation of the impact of many other factors: different pupil sizes, astigmatism, other higher order aberrations, and decentration.

Evaluating the peripheral optical effect of multifocal contact lenses.
PURPOSE Multifocal soft contact lenses have been used to decrease the progression of myopia, presumably by inducing relative peripheral myopia at the same time as the central image is focused on the fovea. The aim of this study was to investigate how the peripheral optical effect of commercially available multifocal soft contact lenses can be evaluated from objective wavefront measurements. M...
متن کاملMultiple zone multifocal phase designs.
New multifocal phase designs aiming at expanding depth of focus in the presbyopic eye are presented. The designs consist of multiple radial or angular zones of different powers or of combined low- and high-order aberrations. Multifocal performance was evaluated in terms of the dioptric range for which the optical quality is above an appropriate threshold, as well as in terms of the area under t...
متن کاملThrough focus image quality of eyes implanted with monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses
Intraocular lenses (lOLs) are commonly implanted in cataract surgery. Initially lOLs were mainly monofocal, but at present there are many multifocal lOLs available, which are being implanted. Multifocal lOLs have the potential advantage of reducing the dependence on spectacle correction for near vision after cataract surgery. Because the multifocal lOLs superimpose the near and far images on th...
متن کاملOptical advantages and function of multifocal spherical fish lenses.
The spherical crystalline lenses in the eyes of many fish species are well-suited models for studies on how natural selection has influenced the evolution of the optical system. Many of these lenses exhibit multiple focal lengths when illuminated with monochromatic light. Similar multifocality is present in a majority of vertebrate eyes, and it is assumed to compensate for the defocusing effect...
متن کاملExtended depth of focus contact lenses vs. two commercial multifocals: Part 1. Optical performance evaluation via computed through-focus retinal image quality metrics
PURPOSE To compare the computed optical performance of prototype lenses designed using deliberate manipulation of higher-order spherical aberrations to extend depth-of-focus (EDOF) with two commercial multifocals. METHODS Emmetropic, presbyopic, schematic eyes were coupled with prototype EDOF and commercial multifocal lenses (Acuvue Oasys for presbyopia, AOP, Johnson & Johnson & Air Optix Aqu...
متن کاملEarly evolution of multifocal optics for well-focused colour vision in vertebrates.
Jawless fishes (Agnatha; lampreys and hagfishes) most closely resemble the earliest stage in vertebrate evolution and lamprey-like animals already existed in the Lower Cambrian [about 540 million years ago (MYA)]. Agnathans are thought to have separated from the main vertebrate lineage at least 500 MYA. Hagfishes have primitive eyes, but the eyes of adult lampreys are well-developed. The southe...
