چکیده

The technique presently used at most millimeter telescopes is the "Chopper Wheel Method" introduced by Penzias and Burrus (ARAA, 1973, 11,51), in which the output de ection of an observed source is compared with the di erence between the sky brightness and that of an ambient temperature load. The physical temperature of the absorbing atmosphere is then taken to be the same as the ambient load or a mean model of the atmosphere is used. The method is convenient to use, and absolute accuracies of a few percent are typically obtained. Obtaining accuracies at the level of 1% or better requires the use of two black-body loads.

Microwave Radiometer for Cloud Carthography: A 22channel groundbased microwave radiometer for atmospheric research

A 22-channel Microwave Radiometer for Cloud Carthography (MICCY) for the profiling of tropospheric temperature, humidity, and cloud liquid water has been developed. The radiometer has 10 channels along the high-frequency wing of the 22.235 GHz water vapor line, 10 channels along the low-frequency side of the 60 GHz oxygen complex, and 2 channels at 90 GHz. Two features make the radiometer a uni...

MMA Memo 211 Accurate Amplitude and Flux

The 10% amplitude calibration accuracy achievable with the current standard calibration techniques may be suucient to produce images with dynamic range of 10 3 , but achieving a dynamic range of 10 4 or higher with the MMA requires better than 1 percent accuracy in amplitude calibration. A self-calibration technique may be applied to improve images, but it may not be possible in all cases. Ther...

Measuring the Accuracy of MARSS—An Airborne Microwave Radiometer

An airborne microwave radiometer has been thoroughly characterized by the Met Office, using a thermalvacuum test facility and flight test data. Scan dependence due to mirror reflectivity considerations, as well as calibration target thermometry, target thermal gradients, radiometer noise, and radiometer stability are quantified. A resultant accuracy of approximately 1 K is achieved.

Characterization of errors in the use of integrating-sphere systems in the calibration of scanning radiometers.

Laboratory measurements were performed to characterize the geometrical effects in the calibration of the NASA's cloud absorption radiometer (CAR). The measurements involved three integrating sphere sources (ISSs) operated at different light levels and experimental setups to determine radiance variability. The radiance gradients across the three ISS apertures were 0.2%-2.6% for different visible...

The Palomar 200-inch f/9 Cassegrain CCD camera

This article describes the design and construction of a CCD camera for the f/9 Cassegrain focus of the 200-inch (5 m) Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory. This instrument utilizes a set of 18inch (0.45 m) diameter lenses to change the Cassegrain focal ratio from f/16 to f/9, and the optical design prescription of these lenses is reported. For CCDs having 24zm pixels, the f/9 focus gives a rec...
