Dependence of the normalized radar cross section of water waves on Bragg wavelength-wind speed sensitivity

چکیده
-Measurements of the normalized radar cross section (_o) made by the YSCAT nltrawideband scatterometer during an extended deployment on the Canada Centre for Inland Waters (CCIW) Research Tower located at Lake Ontario are analyzed and compared with anemometer wind measurements to study the sensitivity of cr° to the wind speed as a function of the Bragg wavelength. This paper concentrates on upwind and downwind azimuth angles in the wind speed range of 4.5--12 m/s. While YSCAT collected measurements of _o at a variety of frequencies and incidence angles, this paper focuses on frequencies of 2.0, 3.05, 5.30, 10.02, and 14.0 GHz and incidence angles within the Bragg regime, 30-50 °. Adopting a power law model to describe the relationship between _° and wind speed, both wind speed exponents and upwind/downwind (u/d) ratios of _° are found using least squares linear regression. The analysis of the wind speed exponents and u/d ratios show that shorter Bragg wavelengths (A < 4 cm) are the most sensitive to wind speed and direction. Additionally, vertical polarization (V-pol) _o is shown to be ore sensitive to wind speed than horizontal polarization (Hpol) a, while the H-pol u/d ratio is larger than the V.poi u/d ratio.

متن کاملOn radar imaging of current features: 1. Model and comparison with observations
A new radar imaging model of ocean current features is proposed. The simulated normalized radar cross section (NRCS) takes into account scattering from “regular” surfaces (by means of resonant Bragg scattering and specular reflections) and scattering from breaking waves. The description of background wind waves and their transformation in nonuniform medium is based on solution of the wave actio...
متن کاملHigh Wind and Breaking Wave Measurements with Sar Depolarized Returns
The wind generates a distribution of small slope waves and sporadic steep breaking events. Such double structure of the sea surface is expected to have a strong impact on the radar scattering from the ocean surface. The signature of the double structure is in the wind speed dependence of radar returns: linear for scattering from gentle waves and cubic for breaking contribution. The composite-su...
متن کاملAn L-band model function for the ocean-normalized radar cross section derived from PALSAR
The relationship between ocean wind vectors and L-band normalized radar cross sections (NRCS) is comprehensively examined to propose an L-band model function by using the Phased-Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) and scatterometer wind data. Based on more than 90,000 match-ups, the L-band NRCS dependence on wind speed, incidence angle, and relative wind direction is modeled for the ...
متن کاملOn Measurement of the Sea Surface Wind Vector by the Airborne Weather Radars Having a Various Scanning Sector
A method for estimating the near-surface wind vector over water using the airborne weather radar in addition to its standard navigational application is discussed. A case of an airplane rectilinear flight over the water surface is considered. The radar operates in the ground-mapping mode in the range of middle incidence angles as a scatterometer. Wind vector is recovered from the azimuth normal...
