Oligosaccharides in Infants' Faeces.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Concentrated faecal extracts from breast and artificially fed infants during the first week of life were examined by paper chromatography. Besides lactose, glucose and galactose, five oligosaccharide spots were detected. Breast-fed infants showed an additional fucose spot. Complete hydrolysis of the individual oligosaccharides showed glucose and galactose always and fucose in two instances. The oligosaccharides are probably similar to those isolated by other workers from colostrum and human milk. This is a preliminary report.

Dietary prebiotic oligosaccharides are detectable in the faeces of formula-fed infants.
UNLABELLED Human milk oligosaccharides are not digested during intestinal passage and can be detected in stools. In this study it was investigated whether a prebiotic mixture of low-molecular-weight galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and high-molecular-weight fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) can be detected in stool samples of formula-fed infants. The test formula was supplemented with 0.8 g/dl oligos...
متن کاملIn vitro fermentation of carbohydrate by breast fed and formula fed infants.
Unabsorbed carbohydrates are fermented by colonic bacteria to short chain fatty acids (SCFA) which are rapidly absorbed, salvaging energy and reducing stool output. There are marked differences between the faecal flora and SCFA of breast fed (BF) and formula fed (FF) infants which may be related to the higher incidence of diarrhoea in FF infants. Part of this effect may be caused by a differenc...
متن کاملEffects of infant formula containing a mixture of galacto- and fructo-oligosaccharides or viable Bifidobacterium animalis on the intestinal microflora during the first 4 months of life.
Adding prebiotics or probiotics to infant formula to improve the intestinal flora of formula-fed infants is considered to be a major innovation. Several companies have brought relevant formulations onto the market. However, comparative data on the effects of pre- and probiotics on the intestinal microflora of infants are not available. The present study aimed to compare the effects of infant fo...
متن کاملHuman milk oligosaccharides are differentially metabolised in neonatal rats.
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) are complex glycans that are highly abundant in human milk, but not in infant formula. Accumulating data, mostly from in vitro and animal studies, indicate that HMO benefit the breast-fed infant in multiple ways and in different target organs. In vitro incubation studies suggest that HMO can resist the low pH in the infant's stomach and enzymatic degradation in...
متن کاملScreening for cystic fibrosis by analysis of serum protein in faeces.
Faecal specimens from 51 infants free of cystic fibrosis (CF) and from 9 infants with the disease were analysed for albumin and alpha1-antitrypsin content. Faeces from infants with no CF had a mean albumin content of less than 0-1 mg/g dry weight and a mean albumin: alpha1-antitrypsin ratio value of less than 0-1. Faeces from infants with CF had, with one exception, an albumin content of more t...
