چکیده

It is shown that, if the tracer population is supported by a spherical dark halo with a core or a cusp diverging more slowly than that of a singular isothermal sphere, the logarithmic cusp slope γ of the tracers must be given exactly by γ = 2β where β is their velocity anisotropy parameter at the center unless the same tracers are dynamically cold at the center. If the halo cusp diverges faster than that of the singular isothermal sphere, the velocity dispersion of the tracers must diverge at the center too. In particular, if the logarithmic halo cusp slope is larger than two, the diverging velocity dispersion also traces the behavior of the potential. The implication of our theorem on projected quantities is also discussed. We argue that our theorem should be understood as a warning against interpreting results based on simplifying assumptions such as isotropy and spherical symmetry. The properties of field elliptical galaxies at intermediate redshift . II : photometry and spectroscopy of an HST selected sample

A sample of field early-type galaxies (E/S0) at intermediate redshift (z ∼ 0.1− 0.6) is selected, based on morphology and colours from HST-WFPC2 parallel images. Photometric structural parameters (effective radius Re and effective surface brightness SBe) are derived through the F606W and F814W filters, using luminosity profile fitting and two-dimensional fitting techniques. The combined paramet...

A Search for “dwarf” Seyfert Nuclei. Vii. a Catalog of Central Stellar Velocity Dispersions of Nearby Galaxies

We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being relatively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (∼<100 km s −1). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are ba...

The importance of tides for the Local Group dwarf spheroidals

There are two main tidal effects which can act on the Local Group dwarf spheroidals (dSphs): tidal stripping and tidal shocking. Using N-body simulations, we show that tidal stripping always leads to flat or rising projected velocity dispersions beyond a critical radius; it is ∼ 5 times more likely, when averaging over all possible projection angles, that the cylindrically averaged projected di...

Quasar Black Hole Masses from Velocity Dispersions

Much progress has been made in measuring black hole (BH) masses in (non-active) galactic nuclei using the tight correlation between stellar velocity dispersions σ in galaxies and the mass of their central BH. The use of this correlation in quasars, however, is hampered by the difficulty in measuring sigma in host galaxies that tend to be overpowered by their very bright nuclei. We discuss resul...

Super–star Cluster Velocity Dispersions and Virial Masses in the M82 Nuclear Starburst

We use high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy from Keck Observatory to measure the stellar velocity dispersions of 19 super star clusters (SSCs) in the nuclear starburst of M82. The clusters have ages on the order of 10 Myr, which is many times longer than the crossing times implied by their velocity dispersions and radii. We therefore apply the Virial Theorem to derive the kinematic mass f...
