When Food Makes Fuel: The Promises and Challenges of Biofuels
نویسنده
چکیده
World agriculture is at a turning point, with high demand due to economic growth accelerating food prices. In addition, energy and climate change are re-defining the equations of supply and demand. Biofuels have a high place on the global agenda, largely due to rising concerns about national energy security, higher energy prices, and increasing concerns about global climate change, as well as the income expectations of farmers and other investors (von Braun and Pachauri 2006). The idea of using biofuels is in itself not new, but what is new are the strides in technology development which have facilitated greater access to biofuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and biogas. These strides are far from complete and expectations are high — for example, regarding second-generation technologies where cellulose is converted into ethanol from residues such as stalks and leaves. The newer forms of biofuels are cleaner and more efficient than traditional forms of biofuel, and a favorable CO2 balance could help mitigate global climate change. This has increased dependency on natural vegetation and crops grown specifically for energy. While further development and use is high on the global political agenda, it is necessary to carefully assess the consequences that this development will have on the poorest of the poor. Biofuel production may introduce new food security risks and new challenges for the poor. This will particularly be the case when natural resource constraints causes greater trade-offs between food production and biofuel production.

The Viability of Biofuels in Developing Countries: Successes, Failures, and Challenges
In the last few decades, finding alternatives to fossil fuels has become a hot issue across all international frontiers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shed light on the feasibility of using biofuels to meet the growing energy demand as well as to reduce CO2 emissions which are a major cause of global warming, especially in the transportation sector. The...

Roadmaps towards sustainable bioeconomy, including the production of biofuels, in many EU countries mostly rely on biomass use. However, although biomass is renewable, the efficiency of biomass production is too low to be able to fully replace the fossil fuels. The use of land for fuel production also introduces ethical problems in increasing the food price. Harvesting solar energy by the photo...

Algal biorefinery process utilizes every component of algal biomass to produce multiple useful fuel products. In this technique, acid pretreatment of algal biomass hydrolyzes microalgal carbohydrates into fermentable sugars, makes lipids more extractable and a protein part accessible for additional products. In the present study, Chlorella sorkiniana produced higher quantity of biodiesel than B...

In recent years, production and consumption of biofuels has become controversial, mainly due to the competitive use of natural resources for food/feed and fuel production. Second generation biofuels (with cellulosic ethanol being on top of developments nowadays) have a great potential to provide an economically feasible solution. However, high processing costs related to breaking down cellulosi...
