Yunxiang Yan, Planning birth: changes in fertility culture in a Chinese village This article examines how ordinary villagers made theirchildbearing choices and strategized fertility desireswhen they were facing an unprecedented intrusion intothe private life sphere by a powerful state. In theirresponse to the birth control program many villagers hadtranscended the traditional fertility ideals and adjustedtheir reproductive behavior, while others had resisted toit by various strategies and paid a dear price. Why suchdifferences and what are the consequences and implica-tions of these individual choices and strategies? The arti-cle also analyzes sociocultural factors that have con-tributed to the individual choices and strategies, whichhas in turn led to the emergence of a new fertility culture.Résumé Yunxiang Yan, Planifier les naissances : nouveaux comportements en matière de natalité dans un village chinois Cet article envisage comment des villageois planifientles naissances et mettent en œuvre des stratégies repro-ductives face à l’intrusion sans précédent d’un État puis-sant dans la sphère privée. En réponse au programme decontrôle des naissances, bien des villageois ont dépasséles idéaux de fertilité traditionnels et ajusté leurcomportement reproductif, tandis que d’autres s’y sontopposés à leurs dépens. Comment expliquer ces choix etstratégies différents ? Quelles en sont les conséquenceset les implications ? Cet article analyse également lesfacteurs socioculturels qui ont contribué à ces choix etstratégies ainsi, à terme, qu’à l’émergence de nouveauxcomportements.
