Is the Asia Pacific Region Different? Technical Progress Bias and Price Elasticity Estimates for 18 OECD Countries, 1960–1992

چکیده
What have been the effects of technological change on production in OECD economies? Are there any systematic differences between the countries in the Asia Pacific Region and other OECD countries? Estimates of aggregate and biased technological change for 18 OECD countries are generated, treating each economy as a trading economy with multiple outputs as well as multiple inputs. Productivity growth is found to be generally positive, but declining for each country over the sample period. Technical progress biases are calculated to identify the effects of technological change. The method employed also yields estimates of price elasticities. Of particular interest is the trend for labour demand to become more price sensitive for all of the countries considered. The estimated elasticity values will be of great use for general equilibrium modelling. —————————————— ∗ † This research has benefitted from helpful comments from an anonymous referee, Knox Lovell, Bert Balk, participants at the Taipei International Conference on Efficiency and Productivity Growth, the 1997 Conference of Economists, Hobart, and at a University of Sydney Department of Economics seminar. Trade Potential of Turkey with Asia-Pacific Countries: Evidence from Panel Gravity Model
As a result of recent developments, global economic centre of gravity has slide to Asia-Pacific region. It is predicted that Asia-Pacific countries will take place at the first row in global trade and nearly a half of the total trade will intensify in this region at the year 2030. On the other hand, the region covers countries from different levels of development. These features of the region p...
متن کاملA Comparative Appraisal of Roadway Accident for Asia-Pacific Countries
This paper describes an attempt to shed some light on road safety in Asia Pacific region by characterizing and assessing its road accidents. The relevant national road accident data were extracted from centralized data sources of international agencies. Due to data incompleteness and missing values, 21 Asia Pacific countries, presenting more than half of the world’s population, were selected fo...
متن کاملEstimating and Forecasting Petroleum Demand in OECD Countries (Gasoline, Jet Fuel and Diesel)
Today, factors such as increasing energy efficiency, use of alternative fuels, and application of new fuel standards and new environmental laws in OECD countries have led to wide-range of changes in the structure of demand for fossil fuels. Given the importance of light derivatives, namely gasoline, jet fuel and diesel in the demand basked of OECD countries we focus on these products. We use ...
متن کاملEvaluate the Fundamental Factors on the World Oil Price
Fluctuations in crude oil prices are among the factors affecting other economic indicators, and therefore these fluctuations have always been of interest to economists. In this paper, the effect of fundamental market factors (supply and demand of crude oil) on changes in world oil prices is addressed and supply and demand elasticity are estimated using the simultaneous equations system consider...

BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) surveillance is an important component of non-communicable disease risk factor monitoring, and occurs through national and international surveillance systems. This review identifies population PA estimates for adults in the Asia-Pacific region, and examines variation in trends and prevalence rates obtained using different PA measures. METHODS Data were obtain...
