Status of H i searches for CHVCs beyond the Local Group

Growing evidence supports the suggestion that the compact high–velocity clouds of H i (CHVCs) are located throughout the Local Group and continue to fuel galactic evolution. If gaseous objects characterised by the FWHM diameter of 10 kpc and H i mass of 1×10 M⊙ that follow for the Local Group sample of CHVCs also populate other galaxy groups, then it is natural to ask if these would not already have been seen by current blind H i surveys of the extragalactic sky. We consider the properties of the deepest published surveys of this type and conclude that the sensitivity and coverage are not yet sufficient to expect detection of CHVC analogues.
