Pensions for Singles and Couples
نویسنده
چکیده
Retirement policies often seek to set minimum pensions at levels that enable single and married pensioners to have the same standard of living. The existing literature on consumer equivalence scales provides little assistance in reaching this policy objective, as the estimated scales are both imprecise and reliant upon strong and opaque assumptions. This paper proposes an alternative modelling strategy which has low data requirements and involves the use of detailed, but transparent, assumptions about the extent of joint consumption of particular commodities. These assumptions are embedded in an economic model of household consumption and combined with household expenditure data to calculate consumer equivalence scales. It is estimated that Australian couples of Age Pension age who own their own home need expenditures between 1.32 and 1.60 times that of single person households in order to have the same effective consumption level. These scales are lower than those used in the pension system at the time the research was undertaken.

Voting on pensions: sex and marriage
Existing political economy models on pensions focus on age and productivity. In this paper we incorporate two additional individual characteristics: sex and marital status. We ignore the role of age, by assuming people vote at the start of their life, and characterize the preferred rate of taxation that finances a Beveridgean pension scheme when individuals differ in wage, sex and marital statu...

The aims of the research I embarked on were: (a) to show the preference of terminal values in personal and in social character as well as the level of religious experience: God's presence and God's absence among singles and married couples; and (b) to show the relation between terminal values in personal and in social character and religious experience: God's presence and God's absence in two g...
متن کاملIntertemporal Behavior and Household Structure∗
In this paper the traditional household Euler equations are estimated for singles and separately for couples. Using the Consumer Expenditure Survey, I reject the Euler equations of couples, but I cannot reject the Euler equations of singles. This result is rationalized using an intertemporal model with no intra-household commitment. Using this model it can be shown that an excess sensitivity te...
