چکیده
The authors combine balloon-borne in situ measurements of water vapour in the tropical tropopause region during the HIBISCUS campaign with observational data of several satellite instruments. Although the performed measurements are of large scientific value, they are not presented well in the paper. The approach of evaluating different types of water vapour measurements is diluted by the way they compare the data. The largest part of the comparison describes the different measurements relative to AIRS, which has been found unreliable at mixing ratios below 10 ppmv by Gettelman et al.(2004). Here, AIRS may have been selected as a reference due to its high spatial and temporal sampling, but the current presentation implies AIRS as a suitable reference in the stratosphere which very much confuses the picture. Evaluation of balloon and satellite water vapour measurements in the Southern tropical and subtropical UTLS during the HIBISCUS campaign
Balloon water vapour in situ and remote measurements in the tropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) obtained during the HIBISCUS campaign around 20 S in Brazil in February–March 2004 using a tunable diode laser (μSDLA), a surface acoustic wave (SAW) and a Vis-NIR solar occultation spectrometer (SAOZ) on a long duration balloon, have been used for evaluating the performances of ...
متن کاملMesoscale modelling of water vapour in the tropical UTLS: two case studies from the HIBISCUS campaign
In this study, we evaluate the ability of the BRAMS (Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) mesoscale model compared to ECMWF global analysis to simulate the observed vertical variations of water vapour in the tropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The observations are balloon-borne measurements of water vapour mixing ratio and temperature from microSDLA (Tunable Dio...

a) It is not true that satellites are the only means to get information on tracers at global scale. This is true for CO but not for O3 and H2O. O3 climatologies are available from a large number of ozonesondes in both the UT and the LS particularly in the NH, coincident in time with ACE-FTS, which could be used for evaluating the performances of the instrument, as done for SAGE, HALOE etc. Simi...
متن کاملUTLS water vapour from SCIAMACHY limb measurementsV3.01 (2002-2012).
The SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) aboard the Envisat satellite provided measurements from August 2002 until April 2012. SCIAMACHY measured the scattered or direct sunlight using different observation geometries. The limb viewing geometry allows the retrieval of water vapour at about 10-25 km height from the near-infrared spectral range (1353-1...
