چکیده

The Global Precipitation Mission is currently being planned as a follow-on to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission. One of the key components of the GPM science instrumentation is an advanced, dual-frequency rain mapping radar. In this paper, we present a potential system concept for this secondgeneration spaceborne precipitation radar. This proposed design ncorporates s veral advanced features, including 13.6/35-GHz dual frequency radar channels; a dual-frequency, wide-swath scanning, deployable antenna; digital chirp generation and the corresponding on-board pulse compression scheme; and adaptively antenna scanning.

Spaceborne Atmospheric Radar Technology

NASA is developing advanced instrument concepts and technologies for future spaceborne atmospheric radars, with the over-arching objectives of making such instruments more capable in supporting future science needs, and more cost effective. Two such examples are the Second-Generation Precipitation Radar (PR-2) and the Nexrad-In-Space (NIS). PR2 is a 14/35-GHz dual-frequency rain radar with a de...

Intercomparison of Vertical Structure of Storms Revealed by Ground-Based (NMQ) and Spaceborne Radars (CloudSat-CPR and TRMM-PR)

Spaceborne radars provide great opportunities to investigate the vertical structure of clouds and precipitation. Two typical spaceborne radars for such a study are the W-band Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) and Ku-band Precipitation Radar (PR), which are onboard NASA's CloudSat and TRMM satellites, respectively. Compared to S-band ground-based radars, they have distinct scattering characteristics f...

Cloud and Precipitation Observation by Spaceborne Radar in Japan: Current and Future Missions

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a Japan-US joint satellite mission which equips the world first spaceborne precipitation radar (PR) as well as microwave imager (TMI) and has been producing very valuable precipitation data more than twelve years. This long term precipitation record including vertical profile information from the TRMM PR made it possible to provide not only the ...

Similarities and Improvements of GPM Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) upon TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) in Global Precipitation Rate Estimation, Type Classification and Vertical Profiling

Spaceborne precipitation radars are powerful tools used to acquire adequate and highquality precipitation estimates with high spatial resolution for a variety of applications in hydrological research. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, which deployed the first spaceborne Kaand Ku-dual frequency radar (DPR), was launched in February 2014 as the upgraded successor of the Tropical...

Airborne Radar Observations of Severe Hailstorms: Implications for Future Spaceborne Radar

A new dual-frequency (Ku and Ka band) nadir-pointing Doppler radar on the high-altitude NASA ER-2 aircraft, called the High-Altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP), has collected data over severe thunderstorms in Oklahoma and Kansas during the Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E). The overarching motivation for this study is to understand the behavior of...
