What Drives Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon?
نویسنده
چکیده
While previous empirical analysis of deforestation focused on population, this paper builds from a model of land use which suggests many determinants of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. I derive a deforestation equation from this model and test a number of those factors using county-level data for the period 1978]1988. The data include a satellite deforestation measure which allows improved within-country analysis. The major empirical finding is the Ž . significance of both land characteristics such as soil quality and vegetation density and Ž factors affecting transport costs such as distance to major markets and both ownand . neighboring-county roads . Government development projects also appear to affect clearing, although credit infrastructure does not. However, as such policies themselves may be functions of other factors, estimated effects of policies must be interpreted with some caution. Finally, the population density does not have a significant effect on deforestation when many potential determinants are included. However, a quadratic specification reveals a more robust result: the first migrants to a county have greater impact than later immigrants. This implies that the distribution of population affects its impact. Q 1999 Academic Press

The role of pasture and soybean in deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon
The dynamics of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon are complex. A growing debate considers the extent to which deforestation is a result of the expansion of the Brazilian soy industry. Most recent analyses suggest that deforestation is driven by the expansion of cattle ranching, rather than soy. Soy seems to be replacing previously deforested land and/or land previously under pasture. In thi...
متن کاملDeforestation Slowdown in the Brazilian Amazon: Prices or Policies?
Deforestation and biomass decay have accounted for approximately 17% of global greenhouse gas emissions (IPCC, 2007).1 This raises concerns about the extent of forest clearings in the Amazon, the planet’s largest rainforest tract. The region has long been the world’s most active agricultural frontier in terms of forest loss and CO2 emissions. In Brazil, the conversion of forest areas in the Def...

Researchers are increasingly interested in understanding the impact of contentious social processes on land change. In the Brazilian Amazon, there are often contentious interactions between landholders defending private property rights and squatters who have the right to occupy land that is deemed unproductive. Previous studies suggest that the contentious social processes inherent in the Brazi...
متن کاملOntology-Based Modeling of Land Change Trajectories in the Brazilian Amazon
Tropical deforestation is an example of geochange with massive impacts to the environment locally and globally. In the Brazilian Amazon deforestation has prevailed owing mostly to private investments in agricultural expansion, associated with large-scale cattle ranching, smallscale subsistence farming and soybeans expansion. Data on deforestation have been relied mostly on satellite remote sens...
متن کاملSemantic Linking of Data for the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest Statistics
Different techniques, including remote sensing, are used to collect data about the deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. However, a key problem for integrating all the resulting datasets for statistical analysis is the semantic diversity among these datasets. In this paper we identify key semantic interoperability challenges for the Brazilian Amazon rainforest statistics.
