Emily Stone Department of Mathematical Sciences, The University of Montana, Missoula, MT 59812 U.S.A. Abstract In this paper we present stability analysis of a nonlinear model for chatter vibration in a drilling operation. The results build our previous work [1, 2], where the model was developed and the nonlinear stability of the vibration modes as cutting width is varied was presented. Here we analyze the effect of varying cutting depth. We show that qualitatively different stability lobes are produced in this case. We analyze the criticality of the Hopf bifurcation associated with loss of stability and show that changes in criticality can occur along the stability boundary, resulting in extra periodic solutions.

Statistics and Time Series Analyses of BTA Deep Hole Drilling

BTA 1 deep hole drilling is a method for producing precision bores with high length to diameter ratios. The long and slender tools feature low torsional and bending stiffness. This may lead to undesirable dynamic disturbances of the machining process usually classified as either chatter vibration or spiralling. Prediction and identification of the causes of these process failures is important f...

Design of A No-chatter Fractional Sliding Mode Control Approach for Stabilization of Non-Integer Chaotic ‎Systems‎

A nonlinear chattering-free sliding mode control method is designed to stabilize fractional chaotic systems with model uncertainties and external disturbances. The main feature of this controller is rapid convergence to equilibrium point, minimize chattering and resistance against uncertainties. The frequency distributed model is used to prove the stability of the controlled system based on dir...

Development of a mechanical earth model in an Iranian off-shore gas field

Wellbore instability is a quite common event during drilling, and causes many problems such as stuck pipe and lost circulation. It is primarily due to the inadequate understanding of the rock properties, pore pressure, and earth stress environment prior to well construction. This study aims to use the existing relevant logs, drilling, and other data from offset wells to construct a precise mech...

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Cracked Micro-Beams Below and at the Onset of Dynamic Pull-In Instability

In this paper, the effect of the crack on dynamic behavior of cracked micro-beam in the presence of DC and AC loads are investigated. By applying the residual axial stress and fringing field stress, a nonlinear analytical model of cracked micro-beam is presented and crack is modeled by a massless rotational spring. The governing equation of the system is solved using Galerkin procedure and shoo...

Monitoring a deep hole drilling process by nonlinear time series modeling

Deep hole drilling methods are used for producing holes with a high length-to-diameter ratio, good surface finish and straightness. The process is subject to dynamic disturbances that is classified as either chatter vibration or spiralling. In this work, nonlinear time series modeling is used to setup an on-line modeling approach of the time varying dynamics of the process. An on-line monitorin...
