چکیده

Polymer:fullerene blends have been widely studied as an inexpensive alternative to traditional silicon solar cells. Some polymer:fullerene blends, such as blends of poly(2,5bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (pBTTT) with phenyl-c71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), form bimolecular crystals due to fullerene intercalation between the polymer side chains. Here we present the determination of the eutectic pBTTT:PC71BM phase diagram using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and two-dimensional grazing incidence X-ray scattering (2D GIXS) with in-situ thermal annealing. The phase diagram explains why the most efficient pBTTT:PC71BM solar cells have 75–80 wt % PC71BM since these blends lie in the center of the only room-temperature phase region containing both electron-conducting (PC71BM) and hole-conducting (bimolecular crystal) phases. We show that intercalation can be suppressed in 50:50 pBTTT:PC71BM blends by using rapid thermal annealing to heat the blends above the eutectic temperature, which forces PC71BM out of the bimolecular crystal, followed by quick cooling to kinetically trap the pure PC71BM phase. Bimolecular Crystals of Fullerenes in Conjugated Polymers and the Implications of Molecular Mixing for Solar Cells

Organic photovoltaics have recently attracted tremendous attention in industry and academia since they offer the potential to significantly change energy production by drastically reducing the manufacturing cost for solar cells. Organic materials are flexible, lightweight and can be fabricated over large areas via low cost solution-based processing technologies. The most common solar cell imple...

Room to Improve Conjugated Polymer-Based Solar Cells: Understanding How Thermal Annealing Affects the Fullerene Component of a Bulk Heterojunction Photovoltaic Device

We examine how thermal annealing affects the fullerene network in conjugated polymer bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. We begin by creating electron-only devices with a BHJ geometry by blending the fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric-acid-methyl-ester (PCBM) with polystyrene (PS). These electron-only PS:PCBM diodes function even with a poly(ethylenedioxithiophene):poly(styrenesul...

Morphology of polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells

Within the different organic photovoltaic devices the conjugated polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction approach is one of the foci of today’s research interest. These devices are highly dependent on the solid state nanoscale morphology of the two components (donor/acceptor) in the photoactive layer. The need for finely phase separated polymer–fullerene blends is expressed by the limited exciton...

Identifying a Threshold Impurity Level for Organic Solar Cells: Enhanced FirstOrder Recombination Via WellDefined PC84BM Traps in Organic Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

Small amounts of impurity, even one part in one thousand, in polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells can alter the electronic properties of the device, including reducing the open circuit voltage, the short circuit current and the fi ll factor. Steady state studies show a dramatic increase in the trap-assisted recombination rate when [6,6]-phenyl C 84 butyric acid methyl ester (PC 84 BM) is int...

Improvement of light harvesting by inserting an optical spacer (ZnO) in polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells: A theoretical and experimental study

By introducing a thin ZnO layer as an optical spacer, we have demonstrated that inserting this layer between an active layer and a reflective electrode results in a re-distribution of the optical electric field inside bulk heterojunction solar cells. A theoretical analysis by optical modeling showed that the thin ZnO layer could shift the position of the maximum of the electric field into the a...
