چکیده

Combinatorial nanocalorimetry and synchrotron x-ray diffraction were combined to study the martensite-austenite (M-A) phase transformation behavior of Ni-Ti-Hf shape memory alloys. A thin-film library of Ni-Ti-Hf samples with a range of compositions was deposited on a parallel nano-scanning calorimeter device using sputter deposition. Crystallization of each amorphous as-deposited sample by local heating at approximately 10 K/s produced a nanoscale grain structure of austenite and martensite. Individual samples were then cycled through the M-A transformation, while the transformation enthalpy was measured by nanocalorimetry and the lowand high-temperature phase compositions were determined by x-ray diffraction. The techniques enable correlation of the observed behavior during thermal cycling with the thermodynamic and structural properties of the samples.

TRANSFORMATION BEHAVIOR OF NiTi SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS TREATED BY THERMOMECHANICAL PROCESSING USING DSC

Abstract: In the present study the effect of thermomechanical treatment (cold work and annealing) on the transformation behavior of NiTi shape memory alloys was studied. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine transformation temperature and its relation to precipitates and defects. Three alloys including Ti-50.3at.% Ni, Ti-50.5at.% Ni (reclamated orthodontic wires) and 50.6at...

Characterization of smart MARFOS NiTi shape memory alloys

In the present study, structural characterization of NiTi smart shape memory alloys (SMAs), produced by an alternative powder metallurgy approach named mechanically activated reactive forging (MARFOS), was carried out by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed that MARFOS materials had a multiphase nanocrys...

Confirming the Composition of Shape Memory Alloys by Microstructural Characterization

It is well known that the properties of shape memory alloys, such as binary Ni-Ti (nitinol), are very sensitive to composition.[1-3] Especially on the Ni-rich side of stoichiometry, the martensite/austenite phase transformation temperature decreases abruptly when Ni is increased only a few tenths of a weight percent.[4] In ternary high temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs) containing Pt, Pd,...

Effect of Ni-Content on the Transformation Temperatures in NiTi-20 at. % Zr High Temperature Shape Memory Alloys

The effect of Ni-content on phase transformation behavior of NiTi-20 at. % Zr high temperature shape memory alloy (HTSMA) is investigated over a small composition range, i.e., 49.8, 50.0 and 50.2 at. % Ni, by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), high-energy synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). All s...
