چکیده

Essene and Peacor (1995 = " E P " ) published a general review of clay mineral thermometry, the stability of clay minerals and the relevance to natural clay mineral assemblages. Some of the conclusions in that paper have been criticized by Aja and Rosenberg (1996 = "AR") . Our paper dealt with some issues about which there has been healthy (and sometimes highly charged) debate. Such dialogue normally takes the form of 2 papers frequently published in tandem, one a criticism and another a response. We are grateful for a belated opportunity to further discuss the thermodynamic and mineralogical status of compositionally and structurally variable clay minerals, in part because this subject is of critical importance to clay mineralogists. It is therefore essential that the basic theory be clearly defined and understood. This has largely to do with some elementary, but critically important, thermodynamic relations. The discussion of issues by AR is largely in error or misleading and begs for correction. Although Aja and Rosenberg (1992) is not specifically addressed here, many of the points raised represent a criticism of that assessment as well. We will respond only to some of the more important points of disagreement below.

Boron isotope geochemistry during diagenesis. Part I. Experimental determination of fractionation during illitization of smectite

Experiments were performed to measure the isotopic fractionation of boron between illite/smectite (I/S) clay minerals and water as a function of temperature (300° and 350°C) and degree of illitization. Corresponding changes in the oxygen isotopes were monitored as an indication of the approach to equilibrium. The kinetics of the B-isotope exchange follows the mineralogical restructuring of smec...

Formation mechanisms of illite, chlorite and mixed-layer illite-chlorite in Triassic volcanogenic sediments from the Southland Syncline, New Zealand

Clay minerals from the three principal kinds of zeolitic sediments from the type area for zeolite facies alteration, the Triassic Murihiku Supergroup, Southland, New Zealand, have been studied by TEM. Bentonitic tuff consists largely of smectite and heulandite with minor illite; they occur as replacements of glass shards and are inferred to be direct alteration products of tuff alteration. Both...

Fault Friction and the Upper Transition from Seismic to Aseismic Faulting

This paper discusses the processes and mechanical factors that define the seismogenic zone and the updip transition from seismic to aseismic faulting. We review friction laws for granular and clay-rich fault zones and discuss them in the context of the mechanics of stick-slip and the requirements for instability. Seismogenic faulting is driven by the unstable release of stored elastic energy, a...

Compositional Variation in Component Layers in Natural Illite/smectite

-Published chemical data for suites of mixed-layer minerals from diagenetic sedimentary rocks, hydrothermally altered tufts, and a metasomatic bentonite bed indicate that the layer charge and composition of the different components of illite/smectite (I/S) differ from one geological environment to another. It appears that the composition of the elemental smectite and illite layers in the I/S is...

X-Ray Diffraction Studies Of Some Madhupur Clay Samples Of Savar And Dhaka Of Bangladesh With Especial Emphasis On Clay Minerals

The clay and non-clay minerals have been identified by XRD analysis. The non-clay minerals include quartz, crystobalite, orthoclase, microcline, plagioclase, calcite, siderite and dolomite, and the clay minerals include kaolinite (52.39%), illite (36.39%) and illite-smectite mixed layer minerals (11.21%). Kaolinite is the most dominant component in the clay mineral assemblages. The clay mineral...
