چکیده

Effective star formation rates in tabular form are computed which yield a prescription for the star formation activity in model galaxies as a function of ambient density, metallicity, and stellar feedback. The effects of supernova explosions on the thermal balance of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) and the presence of a multi-phase ISM are explicitly included. The resulting grid of models can be implemented easily in N-body codes for the computation of star formation processes in merging galaxies and cosmological simulations. subject headings: galaxies: star formation galaxies: structure ISM molecular processes

Host Galaxies of Gamma-Ray Bursts and their Cosmological Evolution

We use numerical simulations of large scale structure formation to explore the cosmological properties of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) host galaxies. Among the different sub-populations found in the simulations, we identify the host galaxies as the most efficient star-forming objects, i.e. galaxies with high specific star formation rates. We find that the host candidates are low-mass, young galaxies w...

Cosmological SPH simulations: A hybrid multi-phase model for star formation

We present a model for star formation and supernova feedback that describes the multi-phase structure of star forming gas on scales that are typically not resolved in cosmological simulations. Our approach includes radiative heating and cooling, the growth of cold clouds embedded in an ambient hot medium, star formation in these clouds, feedback from supernovae in the form of thermal heating an...

Population III Star Formation and IMF

We review recent 3D cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of primordial star formation from cosmological initial conditions (Pop III.1) and from initial conditions that have been altered by radiative feedback from stellar sources (Pop III.2). We concentrate on simulations that resolve the formation of the gravitationally unstable cloud cores in mini-halos over the mass range 105 < M/M⊙ < 107 an...

Simulating High-Redshift Disk Galaxies: Applications to Long Duration Gamma-Ray Burst Hosts

The efficiency of star formation governs many observable properties of the cosmological galaxy population, yet many current models of galaxy formation largely ignore the important physics of star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM). Using hydrodynamical simulations of disk galaxies that include a treatment of the molecular ISM and star formation in molecular clouds (Robertson & Kravtsov...

An analytical model for the history of cosmic star formation

We use simple analytic reasoning to identify physical processes that drive the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate, ρ̇?, in cold dark matter universes. Based on our analysis, we formulate a model to characterise the redshift dependence of ρ̇? and compare it to results obtained from a set of hydrodynamic simulations which include star formation and feedback. We find that the cosmic star fo...
